MTL or DTL? Choosing the Right Vaporesso Device for Your Vaping Style

By shane margereson

If there's one thing I've learned after flogging thousands of vapes, it's that getting the right device for how you like to vape makes all the difference. Nothing's worse than dropping fifty quid on a new kit only to find it's about as satisfying as breathing through a sock.

Vaporesso's range covers both Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) and Direct-to-Lung (DTL) styles brilliantly, but which one's right for you?

Understanding MTL vs DTL: What's Your Style?

Before diving into specific devices, let's sort out what these terms actually mean, because they're chalk and cheese.

Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) Vaping

MTL vaping's like smoking a ciggie - you pull the vapour into your mouth first, then down to your lungs. It gives you:

  • Tighter draw that feels like a proper smoke

  • Higher resistance coils (usually 0.8Ω and up)

  • Lower wattage (7-18W normally)

  • Works with stronger nic (10-20mg salts, 6-12mg freebase)

  • Smaller clouds but more throat hit

If you've just packed in the fags or don't fancy looking like a steam train, MTL's your best bet. Saves juice and battery too.

Direct-to-Lung (DTL) Vaping

DTL's are where you just breathe the vapour straight down like you're taking a deep breath. You'll get:

  • Much airier draw

  • Lower resistance coils (below 0.5Ω usually)

  • Higher wattage (25w and upwards)

  • Needs weaker nic (0-6mg or you'll cough your guts up)

  • Bigger clouds and warmer vapour

DTL's for cloud chasers and those who want more of a lung-full. Less like smoking, more its own thing.

Best Vaporesso Devices for MTL Vaping

If you're after that tight, ciggie-like draw, here's what Vaporesso has in the locker:

XROS 4: The All-Round MTL Champion

The XROS 4 's become my go-to recommendation for MTL because it just works:

  • Draw that's spot on - tight but not like sucking a golf ball through a hosepipe
  • Cracking flavour from them COREX coils
  • Airflow you can fiddle with to get it just right
  • Decent battery that'll see most casual vapers through the day
  • That leak-proof tech that actually works

What's good about the XROS 4 is you can have it tight as a drum or back it off a bit - whatever floats your boat. The auto-draw's responsive, too, none of that "is it working?" nonsense.

Vaporesso Vibe: Style Meets Substance

If you want something that vapes well but doesn't look like you're sucking on a USB stick, the Vibe 's worth a look:

  • Looks the business compared to most pod kits
  • Uses the same COREX coil tech as the XROS
  • Smooth draw that satisfies
  • Decent battery life and charges up quick

The Vibe's perfect if you want something for a night out that won't look naff but still gives you a proper MTL hit.

XROS 5 Mini: Pocket Perfection

The new XROS 5 Mini takes everything good about the XROS and shrinks it:

  • Tiny enough to hide in your hand
  • Still uses them COREX coils that deliver the goods
  • Perfect for when you don't want to advertise
  • The battery lasts better than you'd think for something so small

If you need something stealthy that'll still sort you out with a proper MTL hit, the XROS 5 Mini's a little belter.

Best Vaporesso Devices for DTL Vaping

If you're after bigger clouds and an airier draw, Vaporesso's got you covered:

Armour G and GS: Pocket Powerhouse

The Armour G and GS is where Vaporesso starts getting serious with DTL:

  • Takes them low-resistance GTX coils (down to 0.2Ω)
  • Big battery (2500mAh in the GS)
  • Goes up to 80W if you fancy
  • Airflow you can open right up
  • Still pocket-friendly(ish)

What's good about the Armour is how it packs mod-like oomph into something that won't weigh your pocket down. With the 0.2Ω mesh coil and airflow wide open, you'll be chucking clouds that'll have people asking what mod you're using.

The GS version's extra battery is a godsend for DTL, as them higher wattages suck juice like nobody's business.

Luxe XR Max: The Ultimate Pod-Mod

For those who want as much puff as possible from a pod system, the Luxe XR Max is top dog:

  • Cranks up to 80W
  • Takes all the GTX coils
  • Holds more juice
  • Proper good airflow control
  • All the fancy AXON chip bits and bobs

The Luxe XR Max is basically what happens when a pod system and a mod have a baby. With the 0.2Ω GTX coil and airflow fully open, it'll give you a DTL hit that's not far off a proper sub-ohm tank.

What makes it better than the Armour is the fancier chip and slightly better airflow control, which lets you dial things in just how you like 'em.

Choosing Based on Real-World Stuff

Beyond the MTL/DTL carry on, there are a few practical things worth thinking about:

Battery Life Needs

If you're a heavy vaper who's out all day:

  • For MTL: The XROS 4 will last longer than the Mini
  • For DTL: The Armour GS or Luxe XR Max are your best bet

If you only vape now and then or you're always near a plug:

  • For MTL: The XROS 5 Mini might be worth it for the size
  • For DTL: The normal Armour G should do you

Portability Priority

If you're bothered about pocket space:

  • For MTL: XROS 5 Mini wins hands down
  • For DTL: The Armour G's a bit smaller than the Luxe XR Max

Juice Guzzling

DTL goes through juice like there's no tomorrow compared to MTL. If you're watching the pennies:

  • Stick with XROS or Vibe for more economical vaping
  • If you do want DTL, the Armour G with a 0.3Ω coil at middling wattage is a decent compromise

The Crossover Option: Restrictive Direct-to-Lung (RDL)

There's a middle ground that some folk love - Restrictive Direct-to-Lung (RDL). It's a direct lung hit but with a bit more restriction.

Any of these devices can do a decent RDL vape:

  • XROS 4 with airflow wide open and a 0.8Ω mesh
  • Luxe XR Max with a 0.6Ω or 0.4Ω coil and airflow halfway
  • Armour G with a 0.4Ω coil and airflow tweaked

This is one of Vaporesso's strong points - their kit can usually be fiddled with to hit that sweet spot if you're not sure which camp you're in.

Final Thoughts: Making Your Decision

When it comes down to it, picking between Vaporesso's MTL and DTL options depends on what you're after:

If you want that ciggie-like feel, decent throat hit, and clouds that won't get you kicked out of the pub, go for the XROS 4, XROS 5 Mini , or Vibe. They're proper good for MTL.

If you're after big clouds, warmer vapour, and something with a bit more welly, the Armour G/GS or Luxe XR Max with them low-resistance GTX coils will sort you right out.

And remember - no law says you can only have one. I've got an XROS for when I'm out and about and something beefier for home use. It's all about what works for you.

Whatever you go for, Vaporesso's stuff is built properly - whether you want a tight MTL draw or a cloud-chucking DTL hit.

Stay safe and happy vaping!
