Got a Caliburn and the flavour isn't quite right? Nine times out of ten it's the liquid, not the kit. I've lost count of how many people message us saying their Caliburn tastes rubbish, and it turns out they've filled it with 70/30 liquid or the wrong nic strength.

This applies to every Caliburn from the G3 through to the G4 Pro KOKO. They all use the same pod system, same wicking, same rules.

Nic Salts or Freebase?

Nic salts. Caliburn pods are built around them.

Salts absorb faster and the flavour comes through cleaner, especially at higher strengths. Try 20mg freebase in a Caliburn and the throat hit will overpower everything else. 20mg nic salt? Smooth enough that you're actually tasting the juice instead of wincing through the draw.

You can run freebase at lower strengths (3mg, 6mg) and it's perfectly fine. Some of our regulars do exactly that. But if you're switching from disposables or cigarettes and want that same quick hit, salts are what you want.

What VG/PG Ratio?

50/50, always. I've tested thicker liquids in these pods and the result is always the same - flavour drops off after a few puffs and you start getting dry hits because the wick can't keep up.

Caliburn replacement coils have small wicking holes. 70/30 or max VG just sits there instead of soaking through. On the other end, really thin high-PG liquid floods the coil and you get spitting and gurgling. 50/50 E-Liquid matches the wicking speed perfectly.

Worth knowing: if a nic salt bottle doesn't list the ratio, it's almost always 50/50. That's standard for UK salts.

Which Nicotine Strength?

20mg works for heavy smokers (15+ a day) and anyone coming off disposables. Strong throat hit, fast satisfaction. This is where most switchers start and it's the right call.

10mg suits moderate smokers or people who've been on 20mg and fancy dialling it back. I vape 10mg day to day and it's enough without being aggressive.

5mg is for light or social vapers. Barely any throat hit. Honestly, a lot of people who try 5mg after using disposables find it too weak and go back up to 10mg.

Don't force yourself to stick with a strength that isn't working. Feeling dizzy or nauseous on 20mg? That's your body telling you to drop down, not push through. 10mg is the safest starting point if you're genuinely unsure, and you can also have a read of our nicotine strength guide.

Caliburn G4 Waves vs Storm Mode

Only on the G4 and G4 Pro - G3 kits don't have this.

Storm fires at full power the whole puff. Warmer, more immediate flavour hit, chews through battery and liquid faster. Uwell markets it as the intense option and yeah, that's about right.

Waves ramps up more gradually. Cooler draw, smoother delivery, kinder on your battery. I've seen reviewers say they can barely tell the difference between the two modes, and honestly at lower wattages I'd agree. Where it gets noticeable is with bold fruity or menthol flavours on higher wattage - Storm punches the flavour at you straight away while Waves lets it build across the draw.

My advice: live in Waves for daily vaping and flip to Storm when you want a stronger hit. That's how I use it.

Getting Better Flavour from Your Caliburn

Prime your pods. Fill it, then leave it alone for 5 minutes. I know that's annoying when you've just bought a fresh pod and want to try it. But dry-firing a new coil ruins it. Five minutes of patience saves you from binning a pod after three puffs.

Keep the airflow tight with nic salts. Tighter draw concentrates the flavour. If you're on a 0.9Ω or 1.2Ω pod with salts, close that airflow down. Open airflow is for the 0.4Ω and 0.6Ω pods with freebase.

Top up the pod before it gets below a quarter full. Vaping on dregs gives you harsh, thin hits and burns the wick out faster than it should.

Know when a pod's done. Most Caliburn pods last a week or two. Sweet flavours kill them quicker - all that sugar gunks up the coil. Once the taste goes flat or slightly burnt, no amount of refilling will bring it back. Swap it.

What Flavours Work Well?

Bold, punchy flavours tend to land best. Fruits, menthols, anything with a strong primary note. The mesh coils are great at picking up those sharp top notes and delivering them cleanly.

Subtler stuff - custards, tobaccos, layered desserts - needs a bit more care. Drop the wattage, tighten the airflow, and give it time to breathe. High power on a delicate flavour just tastes like sweetener.

Your Wenax has stopped playing ball. Could be leaking from the bottom, flashing red, throwing a \"check pod\" error - whatever it is, I've probably seen it before. After years of fielding these questions from customers, nearly all of them boil down to the same handful of fixes.

Same goes for the Sonder Q and Q2 since they run on the same Q pod system. If your Sonder is playing up, you're in the right place.

Try These First

Seriously - before you read any further, do these four things. They clear up about 80% of \"not working\" complaints.

Yank the pod out and push it back in. Hard. A loose connection is behind most of these issues.
Wipe the contacts on the bottom of the pod and inside the kit with a dry tissue.
Check there's actually liquid in the pod. Obvious, I know. But it happens.
Plug it in and charge it. A dead battery looks a lot like a broken kit.

Sorted? Great. If not, keep going.

Wenax Pod Leaking

Most leaks aren't a fault with the kit. Nearly every one I've seen comes down to how the pod is being used or filled.

You're Overfilling It

By far the most frequent cause. Every pod has a max fill line. Go past it and you're creating pressure inside the pod that pushes liquid out through the seals. Side-fill pods are worse for this because you can't see the level as clearly while you're filling.

Keep it to about 80%. That air gap at the top matters - it's what stops liquid being forced through the replacement coils too quickly.

Your E-Liquid's the Wrong Thickness

Wenax pods and Q pods are built around 50/50 VG/PG nic salt e-liquids. Thick 70/30 or max VG juice can't wick fast enough and pools around the coil until it leaks. Too thin and it seeps straight through the seals.

50/50 is the sweet spot. Stick with it.

You've Gone from a Cold Place to a Warm One

Classic winter issue, this. Leave your kit in a cold car then walk into a warm office and the air inside the pod expands. That pushes liquid through the seals.

If it's happened, pull the pod out and blow gently through the mouthpiece over a tissue to clear the excess. Let it sit for a minute before you reinsert.

The Pod's Had Its Day

Rubber seals wear out. Magnetic contacts degrade. If you've been on the same pod for two weeks or more and it's started leaking even though you're doing everything right, the pod is done. Bin it. Fresh pod, problem solved.

It's Not Sitting in the Kit Properly

Should click in with a clean, solid connection. Wobbly? Liquid will seep down into the battery contacts. Pull it out, wipe any juice off the contacts, dry them properly, and push it back in until it clicks. No gaps.

\"Check Pod\" Error

Your screen says \"check pod\" - or on a screenless model like the Sonder Q, it's not responding at all when you inhale.

The kit can't read the pod. That's it. Almost always one of these:

Pod isn't pushed in all the way. Push harder.
New pod still has a plastic cover or sticker over the contacts on the bottom. Peel it off.
Dirty contacts. Wipe the gold pins on the pod and inside the kit with a dry tissue.
Try a different pod entirely. If that one works, the first pod was a dud. If nothing works, the kit might be the problem.

On the Sonder Q2 specifically, \"check pod\" doesn't show on screen because there isn't one. You'll just get zero response when you inhale - dead silent, nothing happens. Same fixes apply.

\"Coil Out of Range\" Error

Only shows up on Wenax models with a screen (Q Pro, Q Ultra). The kit's reading a resistance it doesn't recognise.

A few reasons this happens:

Pod went in while the kit was still warm from use. Switch the kit off, pull the pod, wait ten seconds, reinsert.

Gunk on the contacts. Even a thin layer of dried e-liquid throws the reading off. Clean everything.

Dead coil. Sometimes a coil just fails internally - burns out or shorts. You won't see it from the outside. If cleaning doesn't work, try a new pod.

Wrong pods. Needs to be genuine Geekvape Q pods. Third-party ones sometimes sit at slightly different resistances and the kit flags them.

Wenax Not Firing

Won't produce vapour at all? Work through this.

Red light blinks 3 times - it can't find a pod. Pull it out and put it back in. Clean contacts.

5 red blinks - battery's dead. Charge it fully, then try.

8 red blinks - short circuit. Pull the pod out, press the fire button on its own. If you get 3 blinks now, the coil resistance is too low - grab a different pod. Still 8 blinks? Clean the connector pins inside the kit with a dry cotton bud.

Red light holds steady for about 10 seconds - overheating. You've been chain vaping. Put it down and let it cool.

Nothing at all? No light, no response? Flat battery. Plug in a USB-C cable and give it 10-15 minutes. If it still won't respond after that, the battery's likely reached end of life. Time for a new kit.

All these LED codes work the same on the Sonder Q and Sonder Q2 since they share the same internals.

You're Using the Wrong Resistance Pod

This one catches people out. Wrong resistance for your draw style = gurgling, spitting, leaking.

Tight draws (MTL): 0.8Ω or 1.2Ω. Lower wattage, tighter airflow.

Bigger draws (RDL): 0.4Ω or 0.6Ω. More power, more open airflow.

Where it goes wrong: MTL pod with the airflow wide open floods the coil. RDL pod with airflow cranked tight creates back-pressure that forces liquid out. Match the pod to how you vape and most gurgling/leaking issues disappear.

Replace the Pod or Replace the Kit?

Swap the pod when:

It's over 7-10 days old and flavour's gone flat
Rubber seals look worn or the pod feels loose
It leaks even after you've tried everything above
A different pod clears the error

Swap the kit when:

Multiple pods all fail (tested, cleaned, still nothing)
Won't charge at all
LED is completely dead
Contact pins inside are visibly damaged

Pod Leaking Right Now?

Stop vaping it. Pull the pod out and stand it on a tissue. Wipe down everything inside the kit - especially the battery contacts. Get it properly dry. Liquid on those contacts can cause shorts and stop the whole thing working.

Once it's dry, pop the pod back in and test. Leaks again straight away? Pod's done. Bin it.

I got asked this on live chat last week and realised I'd never actually written about it. I've run Ecigone since 2014 and I've trained 4-5 days a week since I was 18, mostly bodybuilding with some cardio thrown in. I also vape all day, every day. 10mg nic salts, chain-vaping between emails, on the way to the gym, basically any time I'm not asleep.

So yeah, I've got some skin in this game.

In 2024, Manchester Metropolitan University published a study that put actual numbers on what a lot of us suspected. Vaping does affect your training. Here's what they found and what I've noticed from my own sessions.

The Manchester Met Study: What They Found

Sixty people in their twenties, split into three groups of twenty. Non-smokers who didn't vape, vapers with at least two years' use, and smokers with the same timeframe. All had normal lung function on paper.

They stuck everyone on a stationary bike and pushed them to failure. Peak exercise capacity came out at:

Non-users: 226 watts
Vapers: 186 watts
Smokers: 182 watts

Vapers consumed 2.7 litres of oxygen per minute at peak effort. Non-users hit 3 litres. Both vapers and smokers showed impaired blood vessel function, higher lactate, and more breathlessness before they even reached maximum effort.

Dr Azmy Faisal presented the findings at the European Respiratory Society Congress in September 2024. He was blunt about it. Vapers and smokers had measurably excessive breathing during testing and were less fit overall.

Now, it's 60 people. The researchers said themselves that proving causation from this alone isn't possible. But it lines up with earlier work on nicotine and blood vessels. And it matches what I've felt in the gym for years without being able to put a number on it.

Does Vaping Affect Running

This is where the data hurts most. Cardio performance depends on oxygen uptake and how well your body moves it to working muscles. A 10% drop in peak oxygen consumption is a big deal over a 5K or a half marathon.

That could mean hitting the wall earlier, fading on intervals, or watching your pace fall apart in the back half of a race. It won't stop you lacing up your trainers. But if you're chasing times, vaping is costing you something.

Customers who run and vape tell me the same thing. Sessions feel harder after heavy vaping. A few have tried leaving the vape at home for a couple of hours before a run. Most say it makes a noticeable difference. Not transformative, but enough to feel.

Does Vaping Affect Gym Performance

Different story to running because you're not sustaining max output for 30 minutes. Resistance training is bursts of effort with rest in between, so your cardiovascular ceiling matters less rep to rep.

Where it shows up is lactate. The study found vapers had higher lactate and more muscle fatigue at lower intensities than non-users. That burning feeling during a high-rep set? It's coming earlier and hitting harder if you vape. Drop sets, supersets, giant sets, anything that keeps you under tension without enough rest. That's where it catches up with you.

Heavy singles and triples with three minutes between sets? Probably not going to feel much difference.

What I Tried Myself

I'm a chain vaper. I'll admit that. ADHD, running a business, and just being wired the way I am means my vape is basically glued to my hand. I usually train around 2pm and I'll be vaping right up to the gym car park.

A couple of weeks ago I tried something different. Trained first thing, around 6am, straight after my first meal. Hadn't touched my vape since the night before. The difference surprised me. I felt stronger, hit more reps, and my breathing felt more controlled through the whole session.

Then I tried a less extreme version. Stopped vaping at 1pm, trained at 2pm. Not the same eight-hour gap, but still noticeably better than my usual walk-in-vaping-until-the-last-second approach. I've stuck with it since.

I'm not pretending this is science. It's one bloke in a gym in the north of England. But the study data on vasoconstriction supports it. Nicotine narrows your blood vessels and raises heart rate. Give it an hour to clear and those acute effects die down. You're still carrying any longer-term vascular changes, but you've taken the edge off.

Vaping vs Smoking for Fitness

Those Manchester Met numbers put vapers and smokers almost level on exercise capacity, and the headlines wrote themselves. But the full picture is different.

Public Health England's position, backed up again in 2024, is that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking. The NHS still recommends it as a quit tool. That 95% covers the big stuff: cancer risk, respiratory disease, tar damage, carbon monoxide exposure. Exercise capacity is one slice of a much larger pie.

Smoking shoves carbon monoxide into your blood, where it fights oxygen for space on your red blood cells. It coats your lungs in tar. Vaping doesn't do either. But nicotine affects your blood vessels and heart rate no matter how you take it in, and that's what the exercise data is picking up.

If you're smoking now and thinking about switching, do it. I smoked from my teens and the difference when I switched was night and day. Morning cough gone within weeks. Breathing during cardio improved fast. Customers tell me similar stories all the time, people going from wheezing up stairs to running 5Ks within a few months.

If you don't smoke or vape, the Manchester Met research is one more reason to keep it that way.

Getting More Out of Your Training

Drop your nicotine strength. I'm on 10mg nic salts and I notice less impact than when I was on 20mg. Higher nicotine means stronger vasoconstriction. With a refillable pod kit and nic salt e-liquids you can step down at whatever pace works for you.

Put the vape down before you train. An hour minimum. More if you can manage it. I know it's hard. Trust me, I know.

Drink more water than you think you need. Propylene glycol in e-liquid absorbs moisture. You're already losing fluid through sweat. Double up.

Actually track it. Log your workouts. Compare sessions where you vaped right beforehand versus sessions with a gap. Your own data will tell you more than any study.

We get messages on live chat every day from customers who've just bought their first kit and don't know what half the terms mean. So we wrote this vape terms glossary. Bookmark it. A-D

Airflow - The little vent on your kit that controls how tight or loose the draw feels. Closing it down mimics a cigarette pull. Opening it up gives you more vapour.

Bar salts - You'll see this term everywhere now. These are nic salt e-liquids designed to taste like the old disposable flavours. Same recipes, bottled for refillable kits.

Coil - The bit that actually heats your e-liquid. It's a small metal element wrapped in cotton, and it wears out. Most people change theirs every week or two. Our coils guide goes deeper on this.

Disposable vape - Single-use vape. Pre-charged, pre-filled, throw it away when it's done. Banned in the UK from June 2025.

Draw-activated - Means the vape fires when you inhale. No button. Most pod kits work this way and it's what former disposable users are used to.

DTL (Direct-to-Lung) - Inhaling vapour straight into your lungs rather than holding it in your mouth first. Think deep breath, not cigarette drag. Big clouds, low nicotine. Sub-ohm territory.

E-M

E-cigarette / e-cig - What people called vapes before anyone said \"vape.\" Still shows up in government documents and NHS leaflets but actual vapers almost never use it.

E-liquid - The liquid you put in your vape. PG, VG, flavouring, and usually nicotine. Some people call it vape juice, some call it juice, some still say \"the liquid.\" All the same thing. Browse our e-liquids collection.

Freebase nicotine - This was the only type of nicotine in e-liquids for years. It gets harsh above about 6mg, so when nic salts came along and solved that problem, freebase got pushed mainly into shortfills for sub-ohm vaping.

If some of the nicotine and e-liquid terms are blurring together, that's normal. The short version: nic salts go in pod kits at high strengths. Freebase goes in sub-ohm kits at low strengths.

mAh - Milliamp hours. It's the battery capacity number. A 1000mAh kit will last most people a day. 1500mAh will comfortably get through a heavy day. The higher the number, the longer between charges.

MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) - You draw vapour into your mouth, pause, then inhale into your lungs. It's how you smoked a cigarette, and it's why this style works so well for people switching. Pairs with nic salts at 10-20mg.

N-P

Nic salts - A form of nicotine that stays smooth even at 20mg. That's the big deal. Before nic salts, high-strength e-liquid was too harsh to use comfortably. Now it's the standard for pod kits. Browse nic salts.

Nic shot - Small bottle of concentrated nicotine. You pour it into a shortfill bottle to add nicotine. One nic shot in a 100ml shortfill gives you roughly 3mg.

Ohm - Electrical resistance of a replacement coils. Under 1.0 ohm runs hot and produces lots of vapour. Above 1.0 runs cooler and suits the MTL style. You don't need to understand the physics, just know that lower ohm = more vapour.

PG (Propylene Glycol) - One of the two base ingredients in e-liquid. Thin consistency, carries flavour well, gives you throat hit. Higher PG content suits pod kits.

Pod kit - Compact vape with a clickable pod that holds your e-liquid. This is what most people start with now, especially anyone coming off disposables. See our pod kits.

Prefilled - A prefilled pod kit uses pods that already have e-liquid in them. When a pod runs out, you chuck it and click in a new one. No bottles, no filling.

Priming - Dripping e-liquid onto a new coil before you use it. If you skip this step, you'll burn the cotton and taste it immediately. Takes about 30 seconds and saves you a coil. Our priming guide walks you through it.

Puff count - The number printed on prefilled pods and old disposables. \"600 puffs\" means roughly the equivalent of 20 cigarettes. Always approximate though, it depends entirely on how you vape.

R-T

RDL (Restricted Direct-to-Lung) - Sits between MTL and DTL. A bit more vapour than a cigarette-style draw but nothing like a full sub-ohm cloud. Works with 3-10mg nicotine and it's becoming the most popular style with newer pod kits.

Refillable - A refillable vape kit you fill yourself from a bottle. More choice, cheaper over time, slightly more hands-on than prefilled.

Shortfill - 100ml bottle sold with no nicotine. There's space left in the bottle to add a nic shot. Mainly for sub-ohm vapers who want big bottles at low nicotine.

Lost Mary Will Not Charge - How to Fix It

Try a different cable first. Some USB-C cables only carry data, not power. Swap to a cable that is known to charge a phone, and try again.

Clean the charging port. Pocket lint and dust block the connection. A wooden toothpick clears the port safely. Never use a metal pin or paper clip.

Switch power sources. Some computer USB ports give very low output. Try a wall adaptor instead, or vice versa. One source usually works.

Leave it on charge for the full time. A failed indicator LED does not always mean the battery has failed. Leave the kit plugged in for the normal charge time and try vaping again afterwards.

Stop using the kit if it gets hot or takes much longer than 3 hours. A heated kit body or extended charge time points to a damaged battery. Dispose of the device responsibly and switch to a fresh kit.

Battery Tips That Actually Matter

Charge at 20 to 30%, not when fully empty. Lithium batteries last longer when topped up before they run flat.

Avoid overnight charging. Modern kits will not catch fire on a steady charger, but a full battery left on charge for hours stresses the cell and shortens its life.

\n Pubs, shops, offices, cinemas \n	\n No \n	\n House rules. Refusal of service, not a fine. \n

That's the list for the places most people ask about. Everything else you've been told is a policy, not a law.

One caveat we would rather give you than have you find out the hard way: local metro and light-rail systems write their own byelaws, and some went first. The Tyne and Wear Metro made vaping a byelaw offence on 1 July 2025, six months before the national railway did, with a fine of up to £1,000 on stations and on trains. Assume your local tram or metro has its own rule, and check it.

Can you vape on a train?

No, and since 26 December 2025 it's a criminal offence. This is the single biggest change to where you can vape in years, and it went almost entirely unreported.

The Railway Byelaws were amended so that Byelaw 3 now reads: \"No person shall smoke an electronic cigarette or other like device on any part of the railway on or near which there is a notice indicating that smoking is not allowed.\"

Before that date, vaping on a train broke the train company's conditions of carriage. They could ask you to stop and remove you. Now you're committing an offence, and the maximum fine is £1,000. It applies on the train and on the platform, wherever a no-smoking notice is displayed, across the national railway in England, Wales and Scotland.

Two things worth being precise about. The offence depends on that notice being displayed, and the byelaw puts the burden on the prosecution to prove that it was. And the national byelaws do not cover every railway. Merseyrail was taken out of them in 2014 and runs its own, which say nothing at all about vapes.

The Tube is not the only exception

Transport for London isn't covered by the national Railway Byelaws. TfL has its own, and its smoking byelaw only catches a \"lighted\" item. A vape isn't lighted, so there's no offence to charge you with.

TfL bans it anyway, through its Conditions of Carriage, which say you must not \"smoke or use an electronic cigarette\". Break that and you can be removed. You can't be prosecuted.

So you end up with a genuinely odd situation: vaping on a Thameslink train is a criminal offence. Vaping on the Northern line is only a breach of contract. Same city, same journey, different legal footing. And on Merseyrail it is neither. Don't vape on either, obviously. But that's the state of the law.

Can you vape in a pub?

Legally, yes. In practice, almost never.

The smoking ban doesn't apply to vaping, so no law stops you. But a pub is private property and can set its own rules, and most large chains ban it indoors:

Worth knowing: the British Beer and Pub Association has argued against a blanket indoor vaping ban, telling Parliament that some pubs do allow vaping indoors and that it helps distinguish vaping from smoking. So the trade isn't uniformly against you. The big chains just find a blanket rule easier.

The practical answer: assume no, and ask if it matters to you. Being asked to leave a pub isn't a criminal matter, but it's still being asked to leave a pub.

And if you're somewhere you've been given the nod, the device matters more than you think. A low-power pod kit running nic salts produces a fraction of the vapour of a sub-ohm setup. That's the difference between nobody noticing and everybody noticing, and it's why the people who get away with a discreet indoor puff are almost never the ones on a big cloud machine.

Can you vape at work?

That's entirely your employer's call, and the law is on your side more than you might think.

The government's own guidance is blunt: \"The law does not apply to e-cigarettes. Employers can decide if they can be used on their premises.\"

And official public health guidance goes further. It says vaping should not routinely be lumped in with smoking in a workplace policy, that the evidence of harm from second-hand vapour isn't sufficient to justify prohibiting it, and, pointedly, that \"it is never acceptable to require vapers to share the same outdoor space with smokers.\"

The Health and Safety Executive says it doesn't enforce any standard on e-cigarettes and hasn't advised employers to ban them.

So if your employer has banned vaping indoors, that's their right. But if they have banished you to the smoking shelter, they're going directly against the official guidance, and it's entirely reasonable to say so.

Fairness cuts both ways, though. The same guidance notes that people with asthma and other respiratory conditions can be sensitive to airborne irritants, and that their interests should be taken into account. A sensible office policy is a conversation, not a war.

Can you vape in a car?

Yes. There's no law against vaping while driving, though you must stay in proper control of the vehicle. We cover that properly in our guide to vaping while driving.

What about vaping in a car with children?

It's legal, and this one shocks people.

Everyone knows about the law banning smoking in a car with under-18s present, with its £50 fine. Almost everyone assumes it covers vaping.

It doesn't. The regulations make the car \"smoke-free\", and smoking in law requires something lit. Vapour isn't smoke. GOV.UK spells it out in terms, listing what the law doesn't apply to: e-cigarettes (vaping).

So it's not illegal to vape in a car with a child in it. Whether it's a good idea is a completely different question, and we would suggest not, but you won't be fined for it and nobody can tell you that you're breaking the law.

Can you vape in a hotel?

Not in most chains, and it's your wallet rather than the law that suffers.

Premier Inn treats vaping exactly like smoking and charges £100. Travelodge also bans vaping in rooms but publishes no fixed fee at all, reserving the right to recover its reasonable costs. That's arguably the worse deal of the two, because there's no ceiling on it.

On Airbnb, if a listing says no smoking, that automatically includes vaping. Airbnb's own house rules define smoking to include e-cigarettes.

Renting a flat is different again. There's no law, and a landlord's standard \"no smoking of tobacco or any other substance\" clause doesn't, on a natural reading, catch vaping. If a landlord wants to ban vaping, they have to actually write \"vaping\" into the tenancy.

The places that surprise people

\n Schools \n	\n No law bans possessing or using a vape on school premises. Schools ban it under their own behaviour policy. The under-18 rule is about selling, not holding. \n
\n Airports and planes \n	\n Its own tangle of rules. See our guide to flying with a vape. \n
\n Supermarkets \n	\n None of the big chains publish a customer vaping policy at all. In practice you will be asked to stop. \n

Is this about to change?

Probably, and here's where it stands honestly.

The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 got Royal Assent on 29 April 2026. It contains powers for the government to designate places as \"vape-free\", with a £200 fine for vaping in one, £2,500 for a manager who fails to prevent it, and £1,000 for not putting up signs.

But none of it's in force. Those sections are marked prospective. They haven't been commenced, and no regulations designating anywhere as vape-free have been made. There are two separate steps still to happen, and neither has.

The government consulted between February and May 2026 on what should become vape-free. It proposed extending it to indoor workplaces and public places, public transport, children's playgrounds, school grounds, and private cars carrying under-18s. That consultation closed on 8 May 2026 and the government hasn't yet responded.

One detail worth flagging, because the press keeps getting it backwards: the consultation expressly doesn't propose making hospital grounds vape-free. The stated reason is that vaping helps smokers quit, and they don't want to get in the way of that.

So: change is coming, nobody can tell you exactly when, and anyone who gives you a date is making it up.

Wales nearly banned it, by one vote

A footnote, but a good one. In 2016 the Welsh Government tried to restrict vaping in enclosed public places as part of a public health bill. It was defeated at the final stage by a single vote. The bill came back without the vaping clause and became law in 2017 without it.

Had one vote gone the other way, Wales would have had an indoor vaping ban a decade before the rest of the UK is even consulting on one.

The rule of thumb

Since the law is barely involved, here's what actually works:

Outdoors, in the open, away from doorways and away from children: nobody minds and nobody can stop you.

On a train or a platform: don't, it's now a criminal offence.

Indoors anywhere else: assume it's banned, and ask if it matters. You're not breaking the law, but you're a guest on someone else's property, and they get to decide.

The stealthy indoor puff into your sleeve is the single fastest way to make vapers look bad and to get the rules tightened on all of us. It's not worth it.

Yes, you can vape in Egypt. It's legal, it has been legal since 2022, and you can bring your own.

If you've read anywhere that Egypt bans vaping, that page is out of date. Egypt lifted its ban, regulates the market, taxes e-liquid, and Philip Morris openly sells vapes to Egyptian customers on its own website. It's about as legal as it gets.

The real risk in Egypt has nothing to do with nicotine, and almost nobody writes about it. We'll get to that, because it genuinely matters.

Is vaping legal in Egypt?

Yes. Here's the actual position.

Egypt did ban e-cigarettes. The Health Ministry prohibited their marketing, registration and importation, on the basis that nobody had proved they were safe.

That ban is gone. The Health Ministry lifted it, and the market opened properly in April 2022. Egypt now has a product standard for vapes, mandatory health warnings, an excise duty on e-liquid of 2 Egyptian pounds per ml, and 14% VAT on disposables, both approved by the Finance Minister on 30 May 2024.

You don't build a tax system for something you've banned.

So why does half the internet say vaping is banned in Egypt?

Because they're all copying the same broken document, and we can show you exactly where the error lives.

There's a widely-cited factsheet, derived from World Health Organization data, titled \"E-Cigarette Ban & Regulation: Global Status\". It lists Egypt among the countries that ban the sale of e-cigarettes. Travel sites copy it. Vape blogs copy it. AI answers copy it.

The document contradicts itself. It is the Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction's \"E-Cigarette Ban & Regulation: Global Status\" factsheet. Egypt also appears in its list of countries that ban select flavours - a list the same document explicitly defines as \"excluding countries that ban the sale of e-cigarettes\". Egypt can't be in both lists. And its own footnote admits the Egypt entry comes from a background paper reflecting data \"up to 2022\", which is to say the data from before Egypt legalised.

It's a four-year-old snapshot of a country that has since changed its mind, and it has been photocopied across the internet ever since.

We're not going to pretend the whole reference world is wrong, though, because it's not. The specialist legal databases have simply gone quiet on Egypt rather than saying anything false. The error is in that one factsheet, and in everyone who copied it without checking.

Can you take your vape to Egypt from the UK?

Yes. Put the device in your hand luggage, never the hold, and you're fine.

Now here's something worth knowing, because we would rather be honest than confident.

You'll see other sites state firm limits - \"two devices maximum\", \"200ml of e-liquid\", \"declare anything over that\". We couldn't find a legal source for any of those numbers. They're not in Egypt's customs regulations. Cairo Airport's own customs page covers currency, seeds and electronics, and doesn't mention e-cigarettes at all.

We traced where the numbers actually come from, and it's circular. One of the reference databases everyone leans on sources its Egypt travel guidance to a UK vape shop's blog. The vape shops cite the database, the database cites a vape shop, and the number gets repeated until it sounds like law.

So the truthful answer is: there's no published personal-import limit. Bring a sensible personal amount, don't turn up with a suitcase of stock, and you won't have a problem. Egyptian customs do prohibit \"electronic devices beyond personal use\", which is the actual line you would need to cross.

What the Foreign Office says

Nothing. That's not an oversight, it's informative.

The FCDO's Egypt travel advice doesn't mention vapes, e-cigarettes or vaping anywhere. It does warn you about drugs, about drones, about photography restrictions and about carrying ID. Vaping isn't on the list, because vaping isn't a legal risk in Egypt.

The one thing that could genuinely ruin your holiday

It's not nicotine. It's a THC or CBD cart in your bag.

We're putting this in bold because it's the single most important line on this page and almost no other guide mentions it.

The Foreign Office is unambiguous: possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs in Egypt is a serious offence and can, even for small amounts, lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.

This is the mistake that turns a package holiday into a nightmare, and it has nothing to do with vaping being legal.

Where can you vape in Egypt?

In the resorts, in practice, fairly freely. Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada are relaxed about it, and Egypt's smoking law expressly allows designated smoking areas in tourism establishments, which is exactly why hotels tend not to care.

Being straight with you about the law: Egypt's smoke-free rules cover hospitals, schools, government buildings, clubs and public transport. Whether those rules extend to vaping is genuinely unclear, and the sources disagree with each other. We're not going to invent an answer.

The practical rule is the same one that works everywhere: treat vaping as smoking. It reads that way socially, and hotels, restaurants and airports will apply their own rules regardless of what the statute says.

Ramadan

One properly useful warning. During Ramadan, the Foreign Office notes it's culturally insensitive to eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours. That includes vaping. In the resorts you'll get away with it. Out in Cairo or Luxor, you'll cause offence, and it's an easy thing to avoid.

Can you buy vapes in Egypt?

Yes, openly. The clearest proof that this is a real, legal, mainstream market: Philip Morris sells vapes on its Egyptian consumer website, with a store locator and an age gate. That's not something that happens in a country with a ban.

Rough prices, and treat them as indicative rather than current - the Egyptian pound moved sharply in 2024:

Our honest advice is still to bring your own. Egypt legalised partly because it had a smuggling and counterfeit problem, and street-level disposables are exactly where counterfeit product lives. You won't find your flavour, you may not find your coils, and you've no idea what is in a cheap disposable from a kiosk.

Will your UK vape work in Egypt?

Yes, and this is a nice bit of luck. Egypt's product standard (ES 8205-1) caps nicotine at 30mg/ml, refill bottles at 10ml and tanks at 2ml.

Look at those numbers. UK law caps nicotine at 20mg/ml, bottles at 10ml and tanks at 2ml. Everything you already own is comfortably inside Egyptian norms. There's nothing in a British vaper's kit bag that looks unusual to an Egyptian regulator.

Take enough nic salts or e-liquid for the trip, take a spare coil, and take a charged battery.

A pod kit is the sensible travel companion. It sips liquid, it's discreet, and it won't empty your bottles in three days by a pool.

And a refillable kit matters far more abroad than it does at home, because you're never stuck hunting for one specific prefilled pod in a Hurghada kiosk. That's the thing that actually catches people out on holiday, not the law.

Is Egypt likely to ban vaping again?

There's no re-ban on the table. No bill, no decree, nothing.

What there's, is noise. Through 2025 several Egyptian officials, including a presidential health adviser, warned publicly that young people wrongly believe vaping is safe and called for tougher legislation. But those were speeches, not laws, and nothing has followed them.

The live front in Egypt is tax, not prohibition. There's already an excise duty on e-liquid and, since 2024, VAT on disposables. If anything changes, it will be the price going up, not the law going back.

The short version

Vaping is legal in Egypt. Bring your own kit and liquid in your hand luggage, keep it out of hospitals and off public transport, be discreet in public during Ramadan, and don't let a CBD cart anywhere near your suitcase.

Then go and enjoy the Red Sea.

You can vape in Dubai. It's legal, it's been legal since April 2019, and you can bring your own.

Half the internet hasn't caught up. You'll still find law firms and travel sites running pages titled \"UAE Ban on E-Cigarettes\", and they're describing a rule that stopped applying seven years ago.

But here's the bit that actually matters, and almost nobody writes it properly: if you're changing planes at Dubai, UAE law still reaches you. Millions of us go through DXB every year without ever clearing immigration, and there's one thing in a vape bag that can end your holiday, your job and several years of your life. It isn't nicotine.

Is vaping legal in Dubai?

Yes. All of it.

The UAE did ban the sale and import of e-cigarettes. Then it changed its mind. A standards body called ESMA published UAE.S 5030, and from 14 April 2019 vapes could be legally imported, sold and bought.

Since then the UAE has gone further and taxed them, which tells you everything. There's a 100% excise duty on both devices and e-liquid. Governments don't build tax regimes around products they've banned.

Wait - what does the Foreign Office say?

This is worth knowing, because it's checkable and it's reassuring.

The FCDO's UAE travel advice contains no warning about vaping. None. It warns you about drugs, about photography, about public behaviour, about swearing. It says nothing about taking a vape.

The only time e-cigarettes come up at all is in the drugs section, and that's the part you need to read very carefully indeed.

The transit question: what if you're just changing planes at DXB?

This is the question nobody answers properly, so let's do it properly.

UAE law applies to you airside. That's not our opinion. Emirates says so in its own dangerous goods policy: possession of illegal drugs by travellers \"entering or transiting\" the UAE will be punished. And the FCDO spells out that Dubai's detection equipment is \"also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers\".

Being in transit is not a legal force field. Now, the good news and the bad news.

A normal nicotine vape: you're fine

It's a legal product in the UAE. There's no offence to charge you with, and we could find no law, no official warning and no documented case of anyone being arrested in transit for carrying a nicotine vape. Keep it in your hand luggage, keep it switched off, and don't use it in the terminal, because you can't vape anywhere in a UAE airport.

A CBD or THC cart: this is where lives get ruined

Transit will not save you. A British traveller was jailed for ten years and fined 50,000 dirhams over pods containing cannabis oil. An American was arrested at Dubai airport carrying eleven CBD pods.

And it gets worse than that, which brings us to the single most important paragraph on this page.

The thing that will actually ruin your life

Read the Foreign Office's exact words, because we're not going to paraphrase this one:

\"Some skincare products and e-cigarette refills may contain ingredients that are illegal in the UAE such as CBD oil. If you are found in possession of such products, they will be confiscated and you could face criminal charges.\"

And then this:

\"Possession of even the smallest amount of illegal drugs, including cannabis, can lead to a minimum 3-month prison term... The Emirati authorities count the presence of drugs in the blood stream as possession.\"

Read that last line again. Not the pod. Not the residue. Your blood.

So the risk isn't the pod you're carrying. It's the pod you carried last month, in a device you thought you'd cleaned out, and the traces that are still in it. It's the CBD vape you bought perfectly legally at home in Manchester, because CBD is a normal high-street product in Britain and a narcotic in the Emirates.

Since 2024 there has been a softer regime for one narrow case: a non-resident, caught at a port of entry, with a personal-use quantity, on a first offence, can face a fine instead of automatic prison. That is Cabinet Resolution 43 of 2024, and it is narrow.

Step outside it and the Foreign Office is blunt: a minimum three-month prison term, or a fine of between 20,000 and 100,000 dirhams. Twenty thousand is not the ceiling. It is the bottom of the range that applies once you are past the airport.

The rule is simple, and it's the whole reason this page exists. Travel with a device you've only ever run nicotine through. If you've ever put a CBD or THC cart anywhere near it, buy a new one before you fly. It's a £15 problem instead of a ten-year one.

Where can you actually vape in Dubai?

Legal to own is not the same as legal everywhere, and the UAE is strict about this. Treat vaping exactly as you'd treat smoking, because that's how every venue and every officer will treat it.

\n Sharjah \n	\n Assume no, anywhere public. Sharjah banned smoking in public areas back in 2008 and is the strictest emirate by a distance. \n

An honest note on the fines, including a correction to what this page said before. The Metro smoking fine is 200 dirhams, and that is what Dubai's own published schedule says. You will see 2,000 dirhams quoted everywhere for vaping on the Metro. That figure is real, but it is not the smoking fine. The RTA's schedule runs from 100 to 2,000 dirhams, and 2,000 sits at the top for things like damaging Metro property. The number exists. It is simply attached to a different offence. The 500-dirham beach fine we still cannot source anywhere official.

Will your UK vape actually work there?

Yes, and this is a nice piece of luck. The UAE's standard caps nicotine at 20mg/ml, tanks at 10ml and refill bottles at 50ml.

Now compare that to home. UK law caps nicotine at 20mg/ml, tanks at 2ml, bottles at 10ml. Everything you own is comfortably inside UAE limits, and in fact the UAE is more relaxed than we are on bottle size. Your 20mg nic salts are fine.

One quirk worth knowing: the UAE standard bans cinnamic compounds, so cinnamon flavours are effectively off the menu. If you're a cinnamon danish person, take something else.

Can you buy vapes in Dubai?

You can. You probably won't want to.

There's a 100% excise tax on both devices and e-liquid in the UAE. Not on the profit, on the price. That means a vape that costs you a tenner at home is a very different proposition in a Dubai mall, and you'll be hunting for coils that fit a device nobody there stocks.

Take your own. It's the single easiest money you'll save on the whole trip.

Take enough nic salts or e-liquid for the whole trip, plus spare coils, because a coil that dies in Dubai is a coil you can't replace.

A pod kit is the sensible travel companion. It's discreet, which matters a lot more in the Emirates than it does in Benidorm, and it sips liquid rather than draining it. A refillable kit beats prefilled pods abroad every time, because you're never stuck hunting for one specific pod in a country that doesn't sell your brand.

How much can you take to Dubai?

Here we go again.

Every vape blog on the internet will give you a confident number. Two devices. 200ml. Declare anything over that. We went to Dubai Customs' own published traveller allowances and there is no vape limit at all. Not for devices, not for liquid. Vapes aren't on the restricted list and they aren't on the banned list.

What Dubai Customs actually says is that personal belongings come in free, provided they're \"of a personal nature and not in commercial quantities\". That's the real test, and it's a judgement call by the officer in front of you.

So bring what you'll genuinely use. Don't turn up with a suitcase full of stock and you'll never have a conversation about it.

The short version

Vaping is legal in Dubai. Pack it in your hand luggage, never the hold. Don't vape in the airport, the Metro, a mall or anywhere indoors. Be extra careful in Sharjah. Take your own liquid, because the tax there is brutal.

And check every pocket of every bag for anything CBD. That's the one that matters.

Yes. You can take your vape to Turkey, and you can use it when you get there. What Turkey has banned is buying and selling them.

\n\n

That distinction matters more than anything else on this page, because almost every guide collapses it into \"vapes are banned in Turkey\" and leaves you thinking you'll be arrested at Dalaman.

\n\n

You won't. But there is a limit on what you're allowed to bring, it's written down in a Turkish government circular, and the number nearly everyone is publishing is out of date. We'll show you the actual document.

\n\n

Is vaping legal in Turkey?

\n\n

It depends entirely on which verb you're asking about.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Here's how Turkey got here. A Presidential Decision published in the Official Gazette on 25 February 2020 banned the import of e-cigarettes, e-hookahs, their devices, parts and liquids, whether or not they contain nicotine.

\n\n

Turkey never actually passed a law saying \"you may not sell vapes.\" It didn't need to. It banned imports, and it has never granted anyone a licence to manufacture them domestically. Between those two facts, there's no legal way for a shop to get stock. The sale ban is a side effect, not a statute.

\n\n

And critically: none of it touches personal use. The import ban was made under the Customs Law. It's a border measure. Turkish lawyers are consistent on this point, and they lean on the constitutional principle that there's no punishment without a law: no Turkish statute makes using a vape an offence, so no penalty can be applied to a user for using one.

\n\n

Which is not the same as \"anything goes\", and we'll be straight with you about the two places it stops. Bring in more than your allowance and that's a customs matter, and at commercial volumes a criminal one. Use it somewhere tobacco is banned and you're fineable, exactly like a smoker. Both of those are further down this page.

\n\n

How many vapes can you take to Turkey?

\n\n

This is the bit everyone gets wrong, so we're going to be precise.

\n\n

The Turkish Ministry of Trade published Circular 2020/7 on 31 March 2020, titled \"Entry and Transit of Electronic Cigarettes and Similar Goods Carried by Passengers.\" It carves out a personal allowance from the import ban. In the official English text, passengers over 18 may bring:

\n\n

You get \"one electronic device that the passenger is currently using\". And then, separately, you get one of the following: up to 200 heated tobacco sticks, or cartridges and liquid \"not exceeding 30 ml in total\", or up to 10 disposable vapes.

\n\n

The Turkish word between those three is veya. It means or. They are alternatives, not a shopping list, and you pick one lane.

\n\n

Then, on 19 September 2024, Circular 2024/18 changed it. One line, and it's blunt: the phrase \"up to 10 disposable electronic cigarettes\" was amended to read \"up to 3 disposable electronic cigarettes\".

\n\n

So the actual, current allowance is:

\n Your device \n	\n One, and it has to be one you're actually using. \n
\n Then pick one: e-liquid or pods \n	\n 30ml total. That's three 10ml bottles. \n
\n Or disposables instead \n	\n 3. Not 10. It was cut on 19 September 2024. \n
\n Or heated tobacco sticks \n	\n 200. Not relevant to most vapers, but it's the third option. \n
\n Minimum age \n	\n 18. \n

\n\n

Go and look at what else is on the first page of Google for this. You'll see \"10 disposables\" almost everywhere, and you'll see \"10ml of e-liquid\" in a good few places too. Both are wrong. The 10 disposables figure has been dead since September 2024, and the 10ml figure appears to be someone misremembering the disposables number and sticking \"ml\" on the end of it.

\n\n

You can see how it happened. The big tobacco-control reference database that most people quote still carries the old figure, and its page is stamped \"last updated January 2022.\" Everyone copied it, and nobody went back to check whether Turkey had changed its mind. It had.

\n\n

We've read the Ministry of Trade's own PDFs for both circulars, in Turkish, rather than trusting a translation.

\n\n

The 30ml limit is not the 100ml airport rule

\n\n

Worth separating these, because they get muddled constantly.

\n\n

The 100ml container rule at the airport is a security rule about liquids in your hand luggage. The 30ml is a Turkish customs rule about how much e-liquid you're allowed to import. Clearing security at Manchester tells you nothing about clearing customs at Antalya. You need to satisfy both.

\n\n

And be honest with yourself about 30ml. If you're a 10ml-every-three-days vaper, a fortnight in Marmaris is 40 to 50ml, and the allowance doesn't stretch. There's no clever workaround we can offer you. What we can tell you is what actually helps: a low-power pod kit running higher-strength nic salts sips liquid rather than gulping it. A sub-ohm kit by a pool will drink your entire 30ml allowance in four days.

\n\n

What happens if you go over the limit?

\n\n

Not much, and this is the reassuring bit.

\n\n

The circular says it plainly. Anything over the allowance is \"taken to the warehouse for the accompanied luggage of the passengers to be delivered to them when leaving the country.\" If you don't claim it on the way out, it gets destroyed.

\n\n

Read that again, because almost every UK site tells you excess vapes are \"confiscated\". They aren't. The documented consequence of bringing too much e-liquid is that Turkish customs hold it for you and hand it back when you fly home. It isn't a fine, and it isn't a criminal matter.

\n\n

The prison sentences you'll read about are in the Anti-Smuggling Law, which was amended in November 2021 to name electronic cigarettes explicitly. They bite at commercial volumes: one to five years for bringing in stock outside the customs process. That is a smuggler's problem, not a holidaymaker's.

\n\n

We should be straight about the limits of what we know here. We could not find a single documented case of a British tourist having a personal vape seized at Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum or Istanbul. Not in a news report, not in a court record, not in a government statement. Every site that says devices are \"routinely confiscated\" is a vape shop with no source. The legal mechanism for holding excess quantities is real and written down. The stories about it happening to holidaymakers are not.

\n\n

Where can you vape in Turkey?

\n\n

Outdoors, mostly fine. Indoors, treat it exactly like a cigarette.

\n\n

Turkey's smoke-free law is Law 4207, and it's strict. It bans smoking in indoor workplaces and public buildings, on all public transport, in restaurants, cafes and bars, and in school grounds including outdoors. It even reaches outdoor spectator areas at sports and cultural events.

\n\n

Now here's the part the Foreign Office doesn't tell you. In 2013, Turkey bolted a single sentence onto that law: \"every kind of hookah and cigarette which contains no tobacco but is used in a manner imitating a tobacco product is deemed a tobacco product.\" That sentence pulls your vape into the entire smoking ban.

\n\n

So legally, vaping in a Turkish bar is the same offence as lighting a cigarette in one. The penalty comes from the Misdemeanour Law, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry publishes the amount every year. For 2026 it's 1,764 Turkish lira. Do it twice in a year and it doubles.

\n\n

Note that it isn't only indoors. The same law reaches the open-air spectator areas of sports grounds and cultural and entertainment venues. So a football match or an outdoor concert is caught, even though you're standing under the sky.

\n\n

Being straight with you again: that's a smoking fine that reaches vapes through a definitional sentence, and we found no record of it ever actually being handed to a tourist for vaping. We're not going to tell you people are getting fined left and right, because we can't show you one who was. What we can tell you is what the law says, and the law says a bar is a bar.

\n\n

Vaping outdoors on a street isn't an offence, as far as we can establish. It's the bars, cafes, shops, terminals, buses and stadium stands that carry the risk.

\n\n

Can you buy vapes in Turkey?

\n\n

No. Not legally, not anywhere, not in a shop, not in a bazaar, not at the airport.

\n\n

Nothing is licensed for sale, so nothing is legitimately on the shelves. And yet people plainly are vaping in Turkey, which tells you what you'd expect: there's an illegal market.

\n\n

That's not us guessing. A study by researchers at TOBB University and Cornell, published through the National Bureau of Economic Research, found the import ban \"led to the emergence of an illegal market for these products\" and that \"despite the ban, a significant number of consumers currently use vapes.\" The same work found Turkish consumers were willing to pay 37 to 50 per cent less for illegal vapes than legal ones, which tells you what they think of the quality.

\n\n

Turkish customs seized over 1.8 billion lira of smuggled vape product in five years, and 2025 was a record year for raids. Whatever's being sold under a counter in Marmaris came through that pipeline. It has never been notified to a regulator, it's never been tested, and nobody can tell you what's in it.

\n\n

So the practical rule is simple: take everything you need, because you cannot replace anything out there. Not a coil, not a pod, not a bottle. If your only device dies on day two, your holiday is a nicotine-free one.

\n\n

What to actually pack

\n\n

Given one device, 30ml, and no way to buy a replacement, the packing list writes itself.

\n\n

Take a refillable kit rather than disposables. Three disposables won't last a week, and the moment they're dead you're stuck. A refillable device plus 30ml of liquid goes considerably further, and it's the same one device either way.

\n\n

Take spare coils. Plural. This is the single most common way a vape holiday goes wrong, and it's entirely preventable for a few quid. Coils don't count as your device, and they're not a liquid.

\n\n

Take higher-strength e-liquid than you'd normally run. If you're squeezing a fortnight out of 30ml, a 20mg nic salt in a low-power pod will keep you satisfied on a fraction of the liquid a 3mg shortfill would.

\n\n

And charge it before you go. Turkish sockets are the two-round-pin type, so you'll want an adaptor anyway.

\n\n

The one thing that could genuinely ruin your holiday

\n\n

It isn't nicotine. It's a CBD or THC cart in the bottom of your bag.

\n\n

The Foreign Office is about as blunt as it ever gets on Turkey: \"Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long prison sentence of 4 to 24 years and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports.\"

\n\n

And it adds: \"Airports in Turkey have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.\"

\n\n

Read that last clause twice. You don't have to be going to Turkey. Changing planes in Istanbul is enough.

\n\n

We looked hard for a Turkish government source clarifying whether CBD is treated differently from cannabis, and we couldn't find one. Every confident answer we found was on a cannabis blog or a vape shop. So we're not going to give you a threshold or a percentage, because we'd be making it up.

\n\n

What we'll give you instead is the only advice that's safe in the absence of an answer: don't take a CBD or THC cartridge to Turkey. Not one. A nicotine vape and a cannabis cart are near-identical objects in a hand-luggage tray, and they're four to twenty-four years apart in law.

\n\n

What if you're just changing planes in Istanbul?

\n\n

Genuinely useful distinction, this one, and it cuts both ways.

\n\n

For vapes, air transit is exempt. The circular says so directly: the entry rules apply to transit passengers arriving by land or sea, but \"there is no restriction for passengers who will transit our country by air\", because your bag never enters Turkish customs territory. Flying through Istanbul with 100ml in your case is not a Turkish problem.

\n\n

For drugs, transit is no protection at all. The FCDO says the penalties apply \"including when transiting through airports\", and that Turkish scanners are pointed at transit baggage specifically.

\n\n

The vape rules let you through. The drug rules don't.

\n\n

Is Turkey about to change the law?

\n\n

Possibly, and the direction is tighter rather than looser. But nothing has actually happened yet, and we're going to be careful about the difference.

\n\n

There are two draft bills floating around. One, from December 2024, would put three to six years in prison on people who produce, sell or possess vapes for commercial purposes. Some outlets reported that as \"prison for possessing a vape\", which is a misreading. Those two words are doing all the work.

\n\n

The second, from April 2026, is more sweeping. It would write e-cigarettes and heated tobacco into the statutory definition of a tobacco product outright, and it sets a target o

No. Vaping is illegal in Singapore, and it’s the one country on this list where we’d tell you, flatly, to leave the vape at home.

\n\n

But almost every guide you’ll read about Singapore is now out of date, and one of the things they all say is wrong in a way that could genuinely frighten you into a bad decision.

\n\n

Singapore rewrote its vaping law on 1 May 2026. The penalties went up. The drug law changed. And there’s one thing you can do at Changi that means you walk away with no fine at all, which hardly anybody writes about.

\n\n

Is vaping illegal in Singapore?

\n\n

Yes. All of it. Bringing one in, having one, using one, buying one.

\n\n

The law is the Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act, which is what the old Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act was renamed on 1 May 2026. Here is what it actually says.

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n

Look at the top row and then the second one, because the gap between them is enormous, and it’s the single most important thing on this page.

\n\n

Simple possession of a vape in Singapore carries no prison sentence. It’s a fine. That’s what the Act says, and it’s what every Singaporean government page says. If you read a guide that tells you a tourist can be jailed for having a vape in their bag, that guide is wrong, and being frightened by it might push you into doing something stupid, like hiding it.

\n\n

The eye-watering sentences are for importing and selling. Those are aimed at smugglers, and Singapore is jailing them: a warehouse packer got 41 weeks, a driver who ran 5,000 vapes over the causeway got 16 weeks. Not one of the named prosecutions we could find was a tourist with one device.

\n\n

Right. So what actually happens if they find it?

\n\n

This is the bit that matters, and it depends entirely on when they find it.

\n\n

If you declare it: nothing. Genuinely nothing.

\n\n

Singapore's border checkpoints have a Red Channel and disposal bins. Walk through, hand it over or bin it, and you’re done.

\n\n

We’re not guessing at how well this works. In a joint operation at Changi, 177 people were found with vapes. 116 of them declared and disposed of the device and avoided any penalty at all. Sixty-one were fined. The only difference between those two groups was whether they put their hand up.

\n\n

That’s the most useful sentence in this article and we haven’t seen it on a single competing page.

\n\n

If they find it and you didn't declare it

\n\n

You get a Notice of Composition. That’s a fixed penalty, paid on the spot, rather than a court case. Foreigners caught with a vape are explicitly put down this route rather than prosecuted.

\n\n

The last figure Singapore published for a first-time adult offender was S$700, about £410. And here we have to be straight with you: that figure was published under the old Act, and Singapore hasn’t republished it since the law changed on 1 May 2026. It may have gone up. We’re not going to pretend to a precision we don’t have.

\n\n

What we can tell you is that the S$500 figure you’ll see everywhere is wrong twice over. It’s the rate for under-18s, and it’s the old adult rate from before September 2025. Sites are quoting a two-year-old number for the wrong age group.

\n\n

And if you do it twice

\n\n

Short-term visit pass holders who reoffend get banned from re-entering Singapore on departure. That’s a tourist. That’s you.

\n\n

The Kpods thing, and why every other guide is now wrong

\n\n

This is the big one, and we’d rather explain it properly than scare you with it.

\n\n

Singapore has a serious problem with vapes laced with etomidate, an anaesthetic. They’re called Kpods. In September 2025 Singapore made etomidate a Class C controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, which is the same law that carries caning and, at the top end, the death penalty for trafficking.

\n\n

Every guide on the internet still says that. Ours would have too.

\n\n

It stopped being true on 1 May 2026. Etomidate was delisted from the Misuse of Drugs Act on exactly the same day the new Act came in, and moved across into the vaping law as something called a \"Specified Psychoactive Substance\".

\n\n

The penalties were deliberately set at the same level, so nothing has got softer. But the legal basis has changed completely, and it matters for one reason: this is a vaping offence now, not a drug offence.

\n\n

What has not changed is how serious it is. Possessing or using an etomidate vape carries up to 10 years and a S$20,000 fine. Importing one carries a minimum of 3 years and caning.

\n\n

So does an ordinary nicotine vape put you anywhere near that? No. A nicotine vape is the S$10,000 fine. An etomidate vape is the ten-year offence. They’re entirely different sections of the Act.

\n\n

But here is the part that should genuinely worry you, and it’s why we wouldn’t risk it. The law presumes you knew what was in it. If you’re caught with a product containing a specified substance, the burden is on you to prove you didn’t know, whether or not you could even name the chemical. And Singapore's health authority can order a urine test and a hair test.

\n\n

You can’t tell, by looking, what is in a vape you bought from a stranger. Which brings us neatly to the next bit.

\n\n

Can you buy a vape in Singapore?

\n\n

Not legally, and this is where people get themselves into real trouble.

\n\n

Vapes are sold in Singapore. They’re sold on Telegram, through social media, and by people who deliver. In the first three months of 2026 alone Singapore removed over 600 online listings, and seized more than 36,000 devices and components at its borders.

\n\n

Everything on that market is illegal, unregulated and untested. It’s also the exact market where the etomidate pods are. Buying a vape from a stranger in Singapore is how you turn a S$10,000 fine into a ten-year problem.

\n\n

Don’t do it. There’s no version of this that ends well.

\n\n

What if you're only changing planes at Changi?

\n\n

Enormous numbers of British travellers go through Changi on the way to Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, never clear immigration, and assume that means the law doesn’t reach them.

\n\n

We went looking for a straight answer and we’re going to be honest with you: there isn't one.

\n\n

Not from the Health Sciences Authority. Not from Immigration and Checkpoints. Not from Singapore Customs. And not from Changi Airport itself, whose own prohibited-items page lists crossbows and knuckledusters and doesn’t mention vapes at all.

\n\n

So here is our reading, clearly labelled as ours. The Act makes it an offence to \"possess in Singapore\". The transit hall at Changi is Singapore. There’s no transit exemption anywhere in the Act. On the plain words, possession airside is an offence.

\n\n

Against that: every documented enforcement operation we could find happened at arrival, after baggage collection. We found no reported case of anyone being stopped airside in transit.

\n\n

The honest answer is that the law appears to catch you and nobody has ever published a rule saying otherwise. Don’t rely on a transit exemption, because there isn't one in writing. If Changi is on your itinerary, the vape stays at home.

\n\n

Can you vape at Changi airport?

\n\n

No. Not in the smoking rooms, not on the smoking terraces, not anywhere.

\n\n

Changi has genuine smoking areas and they’re for cigarettes. A vape is a prohibited item in Singapore, so there’s nowhere in the country, airport included, where using one is lawful.

\n\n

Are nicotine pouches a workaround?

\n\n

No, and this is the assumption that catches British travellers out.

\n\n

Singapore's health authority lists nicotine pouches, heated tobacco like IQOS, and shisha tobacco as prohibited items, in the same breath as vapes. They sit in the same penalty tier: up to S$10,000 for having them, and mandatory prison for importing them.

\n\n

A tin of pouches in your hand luggage isn’t a clever solution to Singapore. It’s the same offence.

\n\n

The one thing that genuinely is fine is ordinary nicotine replacement therapy: patches, gum, lozenges. They’re medicines, not tobacco products, and they’re sold in pharmacies. If you’ve a long stopover and you’re a heavy vaper, that’s your answer.

\n\n

And CBD? Don’t even think about it

\n\n

CBD is a Class A controlled drug in Singapore, under the Misuse of Drugs Act. That’s the serious law, and it didn’t change on 1 May.

\n\n

Singapore's narcotics bureau is explicit that hemp and CBD products are treated as Class A substances and that importing, selling, possessing or consuming them \"even in trace amounts\" is strictly prohibited.

\n\n

A CBD cart that’s perfectly legal in a British high street shop is a Class A drug in Singapore. If you’ve ever used one, check every pocket of every bag before you fly. This is the mistake that ends lives, not holidays.

\n\n

What the Foreign Office says, and why it isn't enough

\n\n

That's it. Three sentences.

It gives you no figure. It says nothing about the law changing on 1 May 2026, nothing about Kpods, nothing about transit, and nothing about the fact that declaring the device gets you off entirely. It’s accurate as far as it goes. It just doesn’t go very far.

One more thing: don't post about it

In the first three months of 2026, Singapore fined ten people for posting photos and videos of themselves vaping on social media.

Related: since 1 May 2026, bars, pubs and clubs are required to tell you to bin the device or leave, and can ring a 24-hour hotline if you refuse. The bloke behind the bar is now part of the enforcement chain.

So what do you actually do?

\n\n

If Singapore is your destination, leave the vape at home. Take patches or gum. It really is that simple, and a fortnight is survivable.

\n\n

If Singapore is a stopover on the way somewhere it's legal, you’ve a genuine problem, because you need a device at the other end and you can’t carry one through.

\n\n

The sensible answer, and it’s what we’d do: don't fly your good kit through Changi. Take an inexpensive pod kit you can afford to surrender at the Red Channel, and pick up a replacement when you land. A device you can walk away from turns a nasty decision at a customs desk into a shrug.

\n\n

And do the sums before you fly. A cheap refillable kit plus enough nic salts for the trip costs less than a Singapore fine by an order of magnitude, and considerably less than the flight you’d miss.

Vaping is illegal in Singapore. Simple possession is a fine, not prison, and the fine is up to S$10,000. If you turn up with one anyway, declare it and bin it at the Red Channel and you walk away clean. Never buy one out there. Nicotine pouches aren’t a loophole. Yes, and by a wide margin. A twenty-a-day smoker spends somewhere around £6,000 a year on cigarettes. Vaping the same amount of nicotine on a refillable kit costs roughly £500 to £800 a year, even once the new vaping duty starts in October 2026.

That gap is not closing, either. Tobacco duty rises on the same day the vape tax lands, so the difference between the two actually gets wider. Here is the honest arithmetic.

What smoking costs

A pack of 20 in the UK runs to about £16.50, and closer to £19 for some brands. From 1 October 2026 tobacco duty goes up again, adding roughly 50p to a pack once VAT is on top.

Six thousand pounds is a holiday, a second-hand car, or a decent chunk of a deposit. It is the number most smokers never sit down and work out, because it arrives ten or fifteen pounds at a time.

What vaping costs, including the 2026 tax

From 1 October 2026 a Vaping Products Duty of 22p per millilitre applies to all e-liquid, plus VAT, which works out at roughly 26p per ml at the till. It is a flat rate, so it applies whether your liquid is 20 mg or 0 mg.

The important detail is that the duty only lands on the liquid. Coils, pods, kits and batteries are not taxed at all. That is why how you vape matters far more to your bill than the tax does.

The bit most people get wrong about the vape tax

When the duty was announced, plenty of people assumed it would wipe out the savings. It does not come close.

The duty costs a typical vaper around 79p a day, or about £290 a year. That is real money, and it is fair to be annoyed about it. But the tobacco duty on twenty cigarettes a day is many times larger, and it goes up on exactly the same day. The government is taxing both, but it is still taxing smoking far harder, deliberately.

So after October 2026, a twenty-a-day smoker still spends roughly £6,200 a year, and a refillable vaper still spends roughly £500. The gap widens rather than closes. You can see exactly what the duty adds to whatever you buy with the vape tax calculator.

How to make vaping as cheap as it can be

Refill rather than buying prefilled pods

This is the single biggest lever, and it is bigger than the tax. A refillable pod kit with your own e-liquid will always beat buying prefilled pods, because you are paying for liquid rather than for a new plastic pod every time.

Buy in bigger bottles

The duty per millilitre is the same whatever the bottle size, but the liquid underneath it is cheaper per ml in a 100 ml shortfill than in a 10 ml nic salt. If your device suits shortfills, that is where the savings sit.

Make your coils last longer

A liquid you do not enjoy is a liquid you go back to cigarettes over. The saving is only real if you actually stick with it.

How many cigarettes are in a pack, a carton and a pouch?

Worth pinning down, because all the sums above depend on it, and the answers are not as obvious as people assume once you get past the pack itself.

Rolling your own is cheaper per cigarette than buying packs, which is why plenty of smokers switch to it when money gets tight. It is worth being clear that it is not any safer. Hand-rolled cigarettes still burn tobacco, which is the part that does the damage, and rolling tobacco carries duty in the same way. Cutting the cost of smoking is not the same as cutting the harm of it.

Note that a 30 g pouch is now the legal minimum size in the UK too, for the same reason as the 20-pack: making the smallest purchase bigger makes it harder to buy on impulse.

Would bringing cigarettes back from abroad change the maths?

Barely. Your duty-free allowance is 200 cigarettes, which is ten days of smoking for a twenty-a-day smoker. Max it out on two trips a year and you have covered about 5% of your cigarettes, knocking roughly £250 off a £6,000 bill.

Even in a world where every cigarette you smoked cost duty-free money, you would spend around £2,000 a year. Refillable vaping, tax included, is about £500. Vaping wins even against cigarettes with no UK duty on them at all. Our duty-free allowance calculator goes through it properly.

It was never only about the money

The NHS is clear that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking and one of the most effective ways to stop. It is not risk-free, and if you do not smoke you should not start. But if you do smoke, the cost is only the most obvious of the reasons to switch, and it is the easiest one to prove on a calculator.

Round it off and it's roughly £6,000 a year to smoke 20 a day, against roughly £450 a year to vape. Even after the vape tax lands, that gap doesn't close, because tobacco duty goes up on exactly the same day.

Two things nobody else will tell you about these numbers

The official cigarette price is out of date. The ONS series that everyone quotes for the price of a pack stopped being updated in January 2025. There is no official 2026 figure. Anyone quoting you a precise \"average price today\" is guessing. Adding the duty rises since then puts a pack somewhere around £17 to £18 now, but we're telling you that's our estimate, not a statistic.

The vaping figure is three years old and predates the tax. HMRC's £8.60 a week came from a survey done in July 2023. It's the only authoritative UK number there is, and we'd rather give you a real one with its age attached than invent a fresh one. Once duty lands in October, expect it to rise.

Where the savings actually come from

The device is a one-off. The liquid is the running cost, and that's where the gap opens up. A vape kit and a few bottles of nic salts will cost you a fraction of what 20 a day costs, and a refillable kit with shortfills is cheaper again per millilitre.

Whatever you choose, it comes out of the same e-liquid range. The cheapest way to vape is the way you'll actually stick to.

A standard prefilled vape pod holds 2 ml of e-liquid at 20 mg/ml, which is 40 mg of nicotine. A smoker absorbs somewhere between 1 and 2 mg of nicotine from each cigarette, so 40 mg is worth somewhere between 20 and 40 cigarettes. We use the cautious end of that: roughly a pack of 20. That applies to an Elf Bar, a Lost Mary, a Hayati, an IVG, or almost any other prefilled pod sold legally in the UK, because 20 mg/ml is the legal maximum and 2 ml is the standard pod size.

So the honest answer to \"how many cigarettes is an Elf Bar\" is: about twenty. The brand on the front makes almost no difference. What follows is why that is, what the puff numbers really mean, and where the figures stop being reliable.

The sums behind it are simple. Multiply the millilitres by the strength to get the nicotine, then divide by about 2, because a smoker takes in roughly 1 to 2 mg of nicotine from each cigarette. Why the puff count on the box is a red herring

This is the part that confuses almost everyone. A 600-puff vape and a 6,000-puff vape can contain exactly the same 2 ml pod at exactly the same 20 mg/ml. The nicotine comes from the liquid, not from the number of puffs, so a bigger number on the box does not mean more nicotine sitting in the device.

What the bigger puff count usually means is that the device is designed to be refilled from a prefilled container, or that it draws less liquid per puff. Puff counts are also measured in a lab under ideal conditions, and almost nobody matches them in real life. Treat them as marketing, not as a measurement.

What about big-puff kits?

Big-puff kits are the devices that replaced disposables after the UK ban in June 2025. They still use a 2 ml pod, because that is the legal limit for the tank itself, but the pod is topped up from a prefilled refill container that comes with the kit.

So the nicotine adds up across the refills rather than sitting in the device all at once. If a kit comes with a 10 ml refill container at 20 mg/ml, that container holds 200 mg of nicotine, or roughly 100 cigarettes' worth, on top of the 40 mg in the pod itself. Work it out by counting the total millilitres you get through, not the puffs claimed on the packaging.

How accurate is any of this?

It is a guide, not a measurement, and it is worth being straight about why.

A cigarette contains far more nicotine than you actually absorb. A typical one holds 11.9 to 14.5 mg, but a smoker only takes in about 1 to 1.5 mg of it, because most is destroyed by the burning or lost in the smoke. Vaping is different again: how much nicotine you absorb depends on the device, the coil, how deeply you inhale and how often. Two people can get through the same pod and end up with very different amounts of nicotine in their blood.

That is why every figure here says \"roughly\". The comparison is useful for getting a sense of scale, especially if you are switching and want to know whether you are in the right ballpark. Is 20 mg a lot, then?

It is the UK legal maximum, and it is the standard strength for prefilled pods precisely because it is aimed at people coming off cigarettes. If you smoked twenty a day, it is the strength most likely to keep you comfortable. If you were a lighter smoker, 10 mg often suits better. What this means for what you buy

If you're on a prefilled device, the thing to watch is how many refill pods you're getting through in a week, because that's your real nicotine intake, not the number on the box. Our prefilled pod kits all list their total e-liquid volume on the page, so you can work it out yourself.

If you want more control over strength, a refillable pod kit with 10ml nic salts lets you pick your own milligrams and step down when you're ready. That's the route most people end up on.

One thing worth being clear about: nicotine is what makes smoking addictive, but it is not what makes it deadly. That comes from the tar and the carbon monoxide in the smoke. So a nicotine comparison is not a harm comparison. The NHS position is that vaping poses only a small fraction of the risks of smoking, that it is not risk free, and that if you have never smoked you should not start.

How many cigarettes in a 5000 or 6000 puff vape?

Big-puff devices don't hold 5,000 or 6,000 puffs' worth of liquid in one pod. UK law caps a prefilled pod at 2ml, so these vape kits work by pairing a 2ml pod with a refill container that tops it up as you go. What matters is the total e-liquid, not the puff number on the box. A device advertising 6,000 puffs typically holds 12ml in total, which at 20mg is 240mg of nicotine, or somewhere around 120 to 240 cigarettes' worth of absorbed nicotine, depending on which absorption figure you use.

That's why we list the total e-liquid volume on every prefilled pod kit page. The puff count is marketing. The millilitres are the fact.

That gap between what is in the cigarette and what actually gets into your body is the single most misunderstood thing about nicotine, and it is why so many people switching to vaping panic that their 20 mg e-liquid must be far stronger than the cigarettes they just gave up. Why the difference is so big: most of the nicotine in a cigarette is destroyed by the burning, or drifts off in the smoke you do not inhale. What reaches your bloodstream is a small fraction. Exactly how much depends on the brand, the design of the cigarette, and how hard and how often you draw on it. Two people smoking the same cigarette can take in noticeably different amounts.

How much nicotine is in a vape?

Vape strength is measured in milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml), which tells you the concentration of the liquid, not the dose you get. In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is legally capped at 20 mg/ml, and that cap applies to every vape kit and bottle sold legally here.

To work out what is in the bottle or pod, multiply the strength by the size:

If you see a percentage on the packaging instead, it is the same number in different clothes. Divide the mg/ml by 10: 20 mg/ml is 2%, 10 mg/ml is 1%, 3 mg/ml is 0.3%.

The comparison everyone gets wrong

Here is where people tie themselves in knots. They read that a cigarette has about 12 mg of nicotine, look at their 20 mg/ml e-liquid, and conclude they have swapped to something far stronger. It is an understandable mistake and it is wrong twice over.

First, you are comparing a concentration with a quantity. The 20 mg/ml on your bottle is how much nicotine is in each millilitre of liquid. It is not the dose you take in a puff, or a day. It is closer to reading the alcohol percentage on a bottle of spirits and assuming that is how much you are about to drink.

Second, and more importantly, cigarettes waste most of their nicotine. Compare like with like and the picture flips:

So the pack holds something like six times more nicotine than the pod, yet delivers roughly the same amount to the person using it. The cigarettes are simply far more wasteful. That is why a 2 ml, 20 mg pod is a reasonable rough stand-in for a pack of 20 cigarettes: not because the numbers on the label match, but because what you end up absorbing is in the same ballpark. To be clear, that is our reading of the published research, not an official NHS equivalence. Neither the NHS nor the NCSCT publishes one.

The figure that matters is not what a cigarette holds but what a smoker actually takes in. The standard research figure is 1 to 1.5 mg of nicotine absorbed per cigarette (Benowitz), and the National Institute on Drug Abuse gives 1 to 2 mg, while e-cigarettes have been measured anywhere from about 1 to 10.6 mg over the same 20 puffs, depending enormously on the device and the liquid. In other words, vapes can deliver less nicotine than a cigarette or more, and the honest answer to \"which is stronger\" is: it depends on what you are vaping and how you vape it.

Nicotine strength to cigarettes: a conversion table

People often ask what a given strength \"equals\" in cigarettes. Strictly, mg/ml is a concentration, so it only becomes a number of cigarettes once you say how much liquid you get through. Here it is for a standard 10 ml bottle, and for a single 2 ml pod:

So \"3 mg equals how many cigarettes\" has no single answer. Three milligrams per millilitre in a 10 ml bottle is about 30 mg of nicotine, or roughly 15 cigarettes' worth, spread over however long that bottle lasts you.

Does the type of cigarette change the nicotine?

A little, but less than people expect. Nicotine content varies by brand and blend, typically within that 11.9 to 14.5 mg range, and a few brands sit outside it. Menthol cigarettes are not a special case for nicotine: the menthol changes how the smoke feels and how deeply people tend to inhale, but it does not add nicotine to the tobacco. A menthol cigarette contains broadly what an equivalent non-menthol one does.

What matters far more than the brand is how you smoke it. Depth and frequency of puffs change how much you absorb more than the label ever will.

What about patches, gum and nicotine pouches?

These are worth understanding because they are measured differently again. A nicotine patch is labelled by the dose it delivers over a day, not by what it contains, so a 21 mg patch is designed to deliver roughly what a 20-a-day smoker absorbs from cigarettes, and a 14 mg or 7 mg patch scales down from there. Nicotine pouches are labelled by the nicotine in each pouch, and only some of that is absorbed, so a 6 mg pouch does not deliver 6 mg to you.

The important point is that a milligram on a patch, a pouch, a bottle of e-liquid and a cigarette are not the same milligram, because each one delivers a different proportion of what it holds. Comparing the numbers on the labels is exactly the mistake this article started with.

How many cigarettes is a vape worth?

Because a cigarette delivers roughly 1 to 2 mg of nicotine, a rough rule of thumb is to divide the nicotine in your vape by about 2.

Treat those as a guide, not a measurement. It assumes you get through the whole lot, and it takes no account of how you vape. Someone taking long, frequent draws will absorb far more from the same pod than someone having the odd puff. How much nicotine is in popular vapes?

Nearly all prefilled pods sold in the UK use a 2 ml pod at the 20 mg/ml legal maximum, so the answer is usually the same regardless of the badge on the front:

Big-puff kits work differently. The pod itself is still 2 ml, but it is topped up from a prefilled refill container, so the nicotine adds up across the refills you use rather than sitting in the device all at once. The puff count printed on the box tells you nothing about the nicotine, because the nicotine comes from the liquid, not the number of puffs.

Does a higher mg mean a stronger hit?

Not necessarily, and this trips people up too. A 20 mg/ml nic salt in a small pod kit and a 3 mg/ml freebase liquid in a big sub-ohm device can deliver a similar amount of nicotine, because the sub-ohm device vaporises far more liquid with every puff. The concentration and the device work together. It is the reason high-strength liquids are made for small, low-power kits and low-strength liquids for the powerful ones.

The bit that actually matters

Nicotine is what makes smoking and vaping addictive, but it is not what makes smoking deadly. The serious harm from a cigarette comes from the tar and the thousands of chemicals produced by burning tobacco, not from the nicotine itself. That is the whole logic behind switching: you keep the nicotine, which is what your body is asking for, and you drop the burning, which is what does the damage.

The NHS position is that vaping poses only a small fraction of the risks of smoking, and that it is one of the most effective ways to stop. It is not risk free, and if you have never smoked you should not start. It is not risk-free, and it is not for people who do not already smoke. But if you are weighing up a 20 mg pod against a pack of 20, the nicotine is the least of the differences between them.

Choosing your strength

If you're switching from cigarettes, the strength that matters is the one that stops you reaching for a cigarette. Most people coming off 20 a day start on 20mg nic salts in a pod kit, then step down over time. Lighter smokers often do better on 10mg. If you're already comfortable and want to cut down, a refillable kit gives you the freedom to drop your strength a step at a time rather than all at once.

How much nicotine is in a Marlboro, or any other brand?

Broadly the same as any other cigarette. Brands vary a little in the nicotine held in the tobacco, but the amount a smoker actually absorbs is far more about how you smoke it, how deeply you inhale and how many puffs you take, than about which packet it came out of. The old \"light\" and \"low tar\" labels were banned precisely because they misled people into thinking they were taking in less. They weren't. Assume 1 to 2mg absorbed from any cigarette and you won't be far out.

How much nicotine is in a roll-up?

It depends entirely on how you roll it. A thin roll-up holds less tobacco than a factory cigarette and a fat one holds more, so there is no single figure. What is well established is that roll-up smokers are not taking in less nicotine as a rule, and hand-rolling tobacco carries the same health risks as any other tobacco.

Nicotine in a cigarette versus a vape: the short version

A cigarette contains 10 to 14mg of nicotine, but you only absorb 1 to 2mg of it. The rest burns away. A vape is far more efficient: very little of the nicotine in the liquid is wasted. That is why a 2ml pod at 20mg, which is 40mg of nicotine on paper, is not \"twenty times a cigarette\". Once you compare what is actually absorbed rather than what is in the product, it works out closer to a pack of 20.

Short answer: leave it at home. Mexican customs list e-cigarettes as goods you cannot bring into the country, on the same list as weapons and ammunition. They will take it off you at the airport.

But almost every article you will read about this is out of date, and several of them are quoting a fine that does not exist. Mexican law changed on 16 January 2026. The position now is more precise, and in one important respect less frightening, than the internet is telling you.

Here is what the law actually says, taken from the Mexican statute rather than from other people writing about it.

Is vaping illegal in Mexico?

It depends entirely on what you mean, and this is where nearly everyone goes wrong. Mexican law draws a hard line between the supply chain and the end user.

The law in force is the reformed Ley General de Salud, published on 15 January 2026 and effective from the 16th. Its Article 282 Quater bans the production, importation, storage, distribution, sale and supply of vapes across the whole country. Then it adds a second paragraph, which is the part nobody quotes:

\"Se exceptúa de la prohibición, su consumo y posesión cuando no se destine a las actividades o fines señalados en el párrafo anterior.\"

In plain English: possession and personal consumption are exempt from the ban, as long as they are not for one of the commercial purposes listed above. That is written into the statute.

So the honest breakdown looks like this.

That distinction matters, and you will not find it on any other British vape site, because they are all describing the law as it stood before January 2026.

Can you take a vape to Mexico?

No, and this part is not ambiguous.

Mexico's customs agency, ANAM, publishes a list titled Mercancía que no puedes ingresar a México, meaning goods you cannot bring in. Electronic cigarettes and personal vaporising devices are on it, listed under tariff code 8543.40.01, in the same section as firearms and ammunition.

Zero-nicotine devices are named explicitly. The list covers nicotine-free systems as well as nicotine ones, so a 0mg disposable is caught in exactly the same way. There is no personal-use allowance and no duty-free exception.

The Foreign Office says the same thing. Its Mexico travel advice, updated on 4 June 2026, reads:

\"It is illegal to bring e-cigarettes, vaping devices and solutions into Mexico or to buy and sell them. Customs officials will confiscate these items; and they could fine or detain you.\"

Two governments, saying the same thing, on the record. If you take a vape to Mexico, the realistic outcome is that you lose it.

What we do not know, and will not pretend to

Whether a tourist carrying one device across the border legally counts as \"importing\" it, and therefore falls under the criminal penalties, is untested. The statute lists importation without qualifying it as commercial, but the same article expressly excepts possession, and the whole provision is built around the supply chain. There is no official guidance resolving it and we could not find a single prosecution of a traveller.

We are not going to guess. What we can tell you with confidence is that the device gets taken off you, and that the prison sentences in the law are aimed at people selling and importing commercially.

The $400 airport fine that does not exist

If you have been researching this, you have probably read that a hidden vape triggers an on-the-spot customs fine of around $400 to $500, payable at the terminal. It appears on vape blog after vape blog, always stated as fact.

We went looking for the source of that figure. There isn't one.

It is not in the Ley General de Salud. It is not in the Ley Aduanera, the customs law. It is not in anything ANAM or the Mexican tax authority publishes. Mexican customs deal with prohibited goods by seizing them, not by charging a discretionary cash penalty at the desk.

And here is the tell. The same claim circulates elsewhere as $200. Two incompatible \"official\" figures, neither of which can be traced to a Mexican government source. That is not reporting. Somebody made a number up, and everybody else copied it.

And the $12,500 fine is real, but it is not yours

You will also see fines \"of up to $12,500\" quoted at tourists. That number is derived from something real: the maximum criminal fine under the Mexican health law is 2,000 UMA, which works out at roughly £10,000.

But that is the maximum penalty a judge imposes on someone convicted of trafficking, alongside a prison sentence of up to eight years. It is not a charge you pay at an airport for one disposable. Every site that quotes it at holidaymakers has misunderstood what they are reading.

We are telling you this because we would rather you knew the truth than were scared by a made-up number. The real risk is losing your device. That is bad enough without inventing anything.

Can you vape in public in Mexico?

No. And this ban is separate from the vape ban, which is why it still bites even though possession is exempt.

Mexico's tobacco control law, the Ley General para el Control del Tabaco, made the entire country 100% smoke-free from January 2023. Article 26 prohibits consuming any tobacco or nicotine product, and any emissions from one, in a smoke-free space. Vaping is caught by that wording even though the law never uses the word \"vape\".

The definition of a smoke-free space is deliberately broad. It covers enclosed spaces, workplaces, public transport, schools and what the law calls spaces of collective gathering, and it explicitly says these count whether or not they have a roof or walls. Outdoors is included.

In practice that means no vaping in: beaches, hotels, hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, parks, stadiums, shopping centres and public transport.

Can you vape in Mexican resorts?

Legally, no. In practice, it varies, and we are going to be straight with you about the gap.

The statute is absolute and applies to resort grounds like anywhere else. What actually happens is that enforcement inside a private resort is largely left to the property, and plenty of resorts run designated open-air smoking areas. The tobacco law does permit exclusively-for-smoking zones, but only in open-air spaces.

The thing to understand is that a hotel tolerating it is not the same as it being legal. Under the same law, the liability for enforcing the ban falls on the owner or administrator of the premises, which is exactly why hotel staff have an incentive to stop you.

What are the actual penalties?

Here is what the law states, with what it applies to. Note how little of it is aimed at a tourist.

One honest note on that £150 figure. It is the Foreign Office's number, and we are quoting it because it is the official British advice. We could not reconcile it with the Mexican tobacco statute, which sets a higher maximum. Treat £150 as the FCDO's guidance rather than as the ceiling under Mexican law.

What actually happens in practice

This is the part where we separate what the law says from what we could actually find evidence of.

Confiscation is real and documented. Mexican customs classify vapes as non-importable, the Foreign Office says customs \"will confiscate these items\", and there are consistent traveller reports of exactly that. Cruise lines have started formally advising passengers to leave vapes on the ship at Mexican ports.

Enforcement against sellers is real and active. Mexican health regulators have been running verification operations, including at airports, seizing stock and closing premises.

But we could not find a single documented case of a tourist being fined or jailed for one personal device. We looked. The consistent, evidenced outcome for a traveller is that the vape gets taken away. We are not going to tell you people are being locked up when we cannot show you one who was.

Why is vaping banned in Mexico?

It is worth understanding, because it explains why this is not going to be reversed.

Mexico banned the import of vapes in 2021, then banned their circulation and sale inside the country by presidential decree in May 2022. The Supreme Court then struck both down, ruling in 2023 and 2024 that they were unconstitutional.

So the government changed the constitution instead. An amendment to Articles 4 and 5, published on 17 January 2025, wrote the prohibition into the constitution itself. And in October 2024, a separate reform removed the ability to challenge constitutional amendments in the courts at all.

The result: the ban is now entrenched at constitutional level and effectively immune from legal challenge. The secondary legislation that gives it teeth arrived on 16 January 2026. Do not expect this to be overturned.

So what should you actually do?

Leave it at home. That is the whole answer, and every source, Mexican statute, Mexican customs and the Foreign Office, points the same way.

If you are going to Mexico and you vape, plan for it in advance rather than at the airport:

Do not pack it, in hand luggage or hold. It is prohibited goods either way, and there is no personal allowance to fall back on.

Think about nicotine replacement instead. Patches, gum and nicotine pouches are not caught by any of this, and pouches are the easy one to travel with. If you are a heavy vaper, a fortnight without nicotine is a genuinely miserable holiday, and worse, it is how people end up going back to cigarettes. Sort it before you fly, not in the departure lounge.

Sort your kit out before you fly and again when you land back. If you are stocking up before a trip, our e-liquids and nic salts are here, and a spare pod kit at home is a lot cheaper than replacing a vape kit you lost at customs.

And if Mexico is one stop on a longer trip, check the rest of it. The rules change completely from one border to the next, and several countries near Mexico have no restrictions at all.
