What is a Vape Mod?

A vape mod is an important part of your vaping setup, usually box-shaped, which is where the term box mod comes from; this part houses a battery, either internal or primarily external. Vape mods are either single- or dual-battery operated, with the exception of the HOG, which is a quad-battery beast! These batteries then internally power a chipset in a regulated device. The chipset usually offers multiple safety protections, modes and sometimes advanced features. Meanwhile, an unregulated device, better known as a mech mod, is a mechanical tube and nothing more than a switch connector to power the device. There are no safety protections with these mods, and they are only for experienced vapers.

Features of a Vape Mod

Inside a vape mod you’ll find a chipset that controls and regulates the power output ensuring stable and safe performance. They will also have adjustable settings to allow you to change your wattage, voltage and temperature control if applicable. Box mods will also come with multiple protections for safety such as short-circuit protection, over-charge protection, overheat protection and low resistance protection. Screens and displays allow you to monitor battery levels, puff count, wattage and sometimes personalise your display with different themes or animations. These screens would typically be OLED or TFT colour screens. There can usually be one or more buttons for navigation around your device, along with firing and powering on and off. The regulated chipset allows for a more consistent vaping experience with safety features for a reliable and easy to use vape mod.

What’s the difference between a mod and a standard vape pen?

Can I use any tank with a vape mod?

As long as the tank has a 510 connection and supports the wattage range of your mod, it should be compatible.

Do vape mods have built-in batteries?

Some do, but many use removable batteries like 18650s or 21700s, which need charging in a separate charger for safety.

Are mods better for cloud chasing?

Yes. Their higher power output makes them ideal for bigger vapour production when paired with the right tank and coil.

Can I use nicotine salts in a vape mod?

You can, but it’s not usually recommended unless you're using a low-wattage setup with a high-resistance coil.
