What are e-liquids?
E-liquids play a vital role in vaping, it’s what produces the flavour and vapour that we inhale and there are many different variants of e-liquids, different flavour combinations, different nicotine strengths, and different ratios/thicknesses. You may feel a little overwhelmed if you’re new to vaping but fear not, here at Ecigone we’re here to help you on every step of your vaping journey.
So, let’s start by breaking down the basic composition of e-liquids. All e-liquids will contain a mix of VG (vegetable glycerin) and PG (propylene glycol) the extract ratio depends on the type of e-liquid it is. For standard RDL (restricted-direct-lung) and DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping you will likely need a 70/30 VG/PG ratio e-liquid, this is the most common form of e-liquid, many shortfills come with a 70/30 ratio as standard but, always check first before buying. For MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaper you will need a 50/50 ratio e-liquid as the coils used in MTL vaping tend to be much smaller and so require a thinner e-liquid to perform correctly. For more advanced vapers that considered ‘Cloud Chasers’ will want a thicker e-liquid such as 80/20 this e-liquid created thicker, more dense vapour clouds that many vapers prefer but, for less experienced vapers we would recommend you stick with a 70/30 or 50/50 e-liquid to start with.
Along with VG and PG content another very important ingredient in e-liquid is of course the flavourings, these tend to be food-grade flavourings that are used in food manufacturing and are deemed safe to ingest and vape. Flavourings tend to be premixed with your shortfill or nic salt but they can also be purchased separately and are called; Concentrates and are mainly for those that wish to DIY their own e-liquid (more on this later)
Nicotine is the final step of the e-liquid journey, some people prefer to have zero nicotine but the best things is, it’s totally down to you how much or how little nicotine you use and is the main reason switching from tobacco products to vaping is seen as a healthier choice, not only are you free from all the nasty chemicals in tobacco products but you have the option to tailor your e-liquid to your desires. It makes vaping an excellent choice for those that wish to quit smoking as you can start off on a high nicotine dose then slowly decrease the nicotine content and either stay there or attempt to quit altogether, the choice is yours.
Finally, we have the more niche side of e-liquid which is the DIY market. This is mainly for experienced vapers as knowledge of e-liquid mixing is required, there are plenty of excellent online resources for this however should you wish to learn more. For DIY e-liquid you will require a flavour concentrate, VG, PG, and nicotine all of which are usually purchased separately or sometimes all together in DIY e-liquid mixing kits. This method offers greater flexibility and gives you the control on the flavour profile, thickness or thinness of the e-liquid and of course you can customise the nicotine levels to your heart's desires. One thing to consider with DIY e-liquids are steeping times (more on this in the DIY section below).
What are Shortfills?
Shortfills are the most common forms of e-liquid and are generally in a 70/30 VG/PG ratio and on their own they will have zero nicotine content, we add nicotine by purchasing the required ‘Nicotine Shots’ separately. So for a standard 50ml shortfill to make 3 mg nicotine strength you will require one 10 ml nicotine shot and add it to your shortfill to make 60ml of 3mg e-liquid. The ratios grow exponentially as the bottle size increases, there are many excellent e-liquid mixing guides online should you require further help.
Shortfill are also a cheaper (by volume) way to vape over standard 10ml bottles, and if you’re into nic salts, many companies now do what they call; ‘Longfills’ which typically come in kit form, that requires you to add the included VG/PG to the flavour concentrate in the 60ml bottle and then you can add the desired amount of salt based nicotine to the e-liquid to make either 10mg or 20mg of 60ml nic salts can often work out cheaper when you compare that to purchasing 6x 10ml nic salts on their own.
Shortfills generally come in two bottle sizes, 50ml and 100ml with enough room in the bottle to add your desired nicotine so you end up with either 60ml or 120ml of final e-liquid.
What are Nic Salts?
Nic salts play a big part in the vaping world, for years the only way to get high nicotine strengths was to user freebase e-liquid with a high nicotine concentration and while in theory this filled a need it often in practise resulting in a really harsh e-liquid that gave an equally harsh ‘throat-hit’ and while some people like that, it isn’t for everyone hence the nic salt was born. It provides an equally high nicotine level but offers a very smooth ‘throat hit’ that’s more palatable to most people.
Since the advent of the TPD/TRPR regulations the maximum nicotine level permitted is 20mg per 10ml of e-liquid and generally nic salts are available in either 10mg or 20mg nicotine levels. As nic salts tend to be a 50/50 VG/PG ratio e-liquid they are great for pod kits, and for RDL (restricted-direct-lung) and MTL (mouth-to-lung) vapers.
Most commonly, nic salts come in 10ml size bottles but some e-liquid manufacturers have released what we call; ‘Longfills’. Longfills which typically come in kit form, that requires you to add the included VG/PG to the flavour concentrate in the 60ml bottle and then you can add the desired amount of salt based nicotine to the e-liquid to make either 10mg or 20mg of 60ml nic salts can often work out cheaper when you compare that to purchasing 6x 10ml nic salts on their own.
What are DIY E-liquids?
If you like to have greater control over your e-liquids then a DIY option might be for you. Generally speaking this option is more suited to advanced vapers as knowledge of e-liquid mixing is required, however, there are many excellent online forums and websites that show you the process should you wish to learn the process for yourself.
With DIY e-liquids you basically take a shortfill and deconstruct it into its component parts, so you have the flavour concentrate, VG & PG, together with your desired level of nicotine, then using and readily available online e-liquid mixing calculator start to add each component according to the measurements given by said e-liquid calculator to make your desired e-liquid.
The main benefits of going down the DIY e-liquid route are that you get to decide what flavours are used, the nicotine levels, and it can end up saving you money in the long-run compared to purchasing ‘off the shelf’ e-liquids.
What are Disposable-Inspired E-liquids?
Disposable-inspired E-liquids have become extremely popular after the boom of disposable vapes. As we all know, disposable vapes are not just unsustainable and an environmental nuisance, single-use vapes are not cost effective in the slightest. They’re a great way to switch from traditional cigarette smoking, with the added benefits of less harmful effects on the body. However, once the switch has been made with success, its now our job as vape retailers, to encourage the move across to pod kits and nic salts. To make this switch one that can be upheld, the same distinct super-concentrated disposable flavours, have now been mimicked by many e-liquid manufacturers into nic salts, so your favourite flavours can make your vaping journey much more sustainable!
Here at Ecigone, we hold many big brands of disposable-inspired E-liquids, such as Elf Bar’s famous Elfliq Nic Salt, Elux Legend Salts, Bar Juice 5000, Gold Bar, Lost Mary & Many more. All of our Nic Salts are on a Multi Buy Deal 4 FOR £10 - So you can mix & match across all ranges of disposable-inspired E-liquids without breaking the bank!
E-Liquid FAQ
What are e-liquids?
E-liquids, also known as vape juice or vape liquid, are used in electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. They typically consist of a mixture of propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavourings, and nicotine (optional).
What ingredients are commonly found in e-liquids?
E-liquids typically contain propylene glycol (PG) and/or vegetable glycerin (VG) as base liquids, flavourings for taste, and nicotine (optional). PG provides throat hit and carries flavour well, while VG produces vapour and adds sweetness to the taste.
What role do PG and VG play in e-liquids?
E-liquids are available in various nicotine strengths, typically ranging from 0mg (nicotine-free) to high strengths such as 18 mg or 20 mg per millilitre (ml). Some e-liquids offer nicotine salts for smoother throat hits at higher concentrations.
What flavours are available in e-liquids?
E-liquids come in a wide range of flavours, including fruit, dessert, candy, menthol, tobacco, beverage flavours, and more. There are countless flavour options to suit different preferences.
How do I choose the right e-liquid flavour and nicotine strength?
Choosing the right e-liquid flavour and nicotine strength is a matter of personal preference. Experiment with different flavours and nicotine strengths to find what works best for you.
Are there any health risks associated with vaping e-liquids?
While vaping e-liquids is generally considered less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, it is not risk-free. Some e-liquids may contain harmful chemicals, and nicotine is addictive. It's essential to use e-liquids responsibly and be aware of potential risks.
How should I store e-liquids?
E-liquids should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep e-liquids out of reach of children and pets, and ensure bottles are properly sealed to prevent leakage.
Can I mix different e-liquid flavours together?
Yes, many vapers enjoy experimenting with mixing different e-liquid flavours to create unique blends. However, it's essential to ensure that the flavours complement each other and that the nicotine strengths are compatible.
Where can I purchase e-liquids?
E-liquids are available for purchase at vape shops, online retailers, and specialty stores. Be sure to buy from reputable sources such as Ecigone to ensure the quality and safety of the e-liquids you purchase.
