What Experienced Vapers Wish They Knew When Starting With Vaporesso

By shane margereson

When I first picked up a Vaporesso device back in 2018, I made every mistake in the book. I burnt coils, had leaky tanks, and wasted good money on e-liquid that never tasted right.

Fast forward to today, and after trying pretty much every Vaporesso kit that's hit our shelves at Ecigone, I've learned a thing or two about getting the most from these devices.

If you're just getting started with your first Vaporesso, or even if you've been using one for a while, here are the things I wish someone had told me from day one.

Don't Skip the Coil Priming

This was my biggest rookie mistake, and I see customers make it all the time. They're excited about their new Vaporesso, fill the tank, and start puffing away immediately. Then they wonder why they're getting a burnt taste after a few hits.

With any Vaporesso device that uses replaceable coils or pods (like the XROS series), you need to prime it properly.

For traditional tanks like those in the Gen or Luxe kits, put a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the visible cotton sections of the coil before installation.

For pod systems like the XROS range, fill the pod and then wait at least 5-10 minutes before taking your first puff.

I actually go a step further with my XROS pods - after filling, I let them sit for about 10 minutes, then take a few pulls without firing the device (just draw without pressing the button or with the device turned off). This helps pull the e-liquid into the cotton properly.

This simple step has probably doubled the lifespan of my coils. Trust me, those extra few minutes of waiting can save you a fiver on replacing a burnt-out pod.

The Battery Indicator Isn't Always Accurate

This one caught me out for ages. On some Vaporesso devices, particularly the older XROS models, the battery indicator can be a bit optimistic. You might think you've got plenty of charge left, only to have the device shut off mid-puff.

I've learned to recharge my Vaporesso devices before they hit the red or start flashing. For the XROS 4 and XROS Pro, I typically recharge when the light turns blue rather than waiting for it to go red.

With the newer models like the XROS 4 Nano that have more detailed battery indicators, this is less of an issue.

Another battery tip - if you're using a removable battery device like the Gen or Luxe X Max, invest in decent batteries. Those cheap ones might save you a couple of quid initially, but they won't hold their charge as long and could potentially be unsafe.

I use Vapcell batteries in all my removable battery vapes.

Not All E-Liquids Play Nice with All Pods

This one took me ages to figure out. If you're using an XROS or Luxe pod system, not all e-liquids will work well in all pods.

he higher resistance pods (like the 1.0Ω or 1.2Ω) work best with nic salts and 50/50 e-liquids, while the lower resistance ones (0.4Ω and 0.6Ω) can handle higher VG juices.

I once put a thick 80/20 VG/PG e-liquid in a 1.2Ω XROS pod and couldn't figure out why the flavour was terrible and I kept getting dry hits. The juice was simply too thick for that pod to wick efficiently.

As a general rule for Vaporesso pods:

  • 0.4Ω pods: Work great with 60/40 or 70/30 VG/PG ratios
  • 0.6Ω and 0.8Ω pods: Best with 50/50 or 60/40 e-liquids
  • 1.0Ω and 1.2Ω pods: Stick to 50/50 e-liquids and nic salts

Once I figured this out, I started getting much better flavour and coil life from my XROS devices.

The Airflow Makes a Massive Difference

Vaporesso devices, especially the XROS series, have adjustable airflow that many users never bother to mess with. Big mistake!

Playing with the airflow doesn't just change how tight or loose your draw is - it can dramatically impact flavour, vapour temperature, and coil life. I discovered that with my XROS 4 , closing the airflow about halfway gives me the perfect balance of flavour intensity and vapour production with the 0.8Ω pod.

For nic salts in the higher resistance pods, I close the airflow almost completely for a tight MTL draw that mimics a cigarette. With the 0.4Ω pod, I open it up for a looser draw that produces more vapour.

Don't be afraid to adjust the airflow between puffs until you find your sweet spot. It's like finding the perfect position for your car seat - once you get it right, your whole experience improves.

Regular Cleaning Prevents Most Issues

After a few weeks of using my first Vaporesso Gen mod, I noticed the connection between the tank and mod was getting a bit finicky. Sometimes it would work fine; other times, I'd get a "no coil detected" error.

The solution was embarrassingly simple - I just needed to clean the 510 connection. A bit of tissue or a cotton bud to remove e-liquid buildup from the connection point sorted it right out.

For pod systems like the XROS, regularly cleaning the contacts where the pod meets the battery with a dry tissue can prevent many connection problems. I also make sure to wipe down the inside of the mouthpiece every few days - you'd be surprised how much gunk can build up there.

For tanks, I fully disassemble and rinse them in warm (not hot) water when changing coils, then leave everything to dry completely before reassembling. This simple maintenance routine has prevented most of the leaking and performance issues I used to experience.

The "Smart" Features Are Actually Pretty Smart

When I first got my Vaporesso Gen with its "Smart Mode," I was skeptical. I figured it was just marketing fluff and immediately switched to wattage mode so I could set things myself.

After burning through a few coils by setting the wattage too high, I decided to give Smart Mode a try, and I was pleasantly surprised. The device actually does a good job of detecting the coil resistance and suggesting an appropriate wattage.

The same goes for the AXON chip's pulse mode on devices like the XROS Pro - it genuinely does help maintain consistent flavour as your battery depletes. These days, I let Vaporesso's smart features do their thing most of the time, especially with new coils where I'm not sure of the ideal wattage.

The XROS Series Pods Are (Mostly) Cross-Compatible

This was a revelation that saved me some cash. Most pods in the XROS series will work across different XROS devices with a few exceptions:

The 0.4Ω pods only work with the XROS Pro, XROS 4, and XROS 4 Mini

The regular XROS pods work with all XROS devices

The newer COREX 3.0 pods work with all XROS devices and offer better flavour

I used to buy specific pods for each device, but now I just keep a stock of 0.8Ω COREX 2.0 pods that work great in all my XROS devices. Saves money and means I'm never caught short if one device runs out of pods.

Temperature Control Actually Works on Vaporesso Mods

On many cheaper mods, temperature control mode is included but works so poorly that most vapers avoid it entirely. I was in that camp until I properly tried TC mode on my Vaporesso Gen.

With a compatible coil (stainless steel works best for me), the temperature control on Vaporesso mods is surprisingly accurate. Once I got it dialed in, I found it gave me a more consistent vape and actually extended my coil life because it prevented any dry hits.

It took some experimenting to get it right, but now I use TC mode almost exclusively on my Gen when I'm at home. For out and about, I still use wattage mode as it's simpler.

That Slide Lock on the XROS Pro? Use It.

When the XROS Pro came out with its slide lock feature, I thought it was a bit of a gimmick. Until I accidentally fired it in my pocket and burnt a pod.

The slide lock is genuinely useful - it prevents accidental firing while still allowing auto-draw. I now make it a habit to lock the device whenever it goes in my pocket. That simple habit has probably saved me from replacing several pods (and possibly a pair of jeans).

Vaporesso's Support Resources Are Actually Helpful

I don't know why it took me so long to actually read the manuals and check out Vaporesso's website when I had issues, but when I finally did, I found solutions to most of my problems.

Their site has detailed guides for all their devices, including troubleshooting steps for common issues. For example, I learned that the XROS 4's three blinks means a short circuit, while five blinks means no pod detected.

What I'd Tell My Younger Vaping Self

If I could go back in time and give myself advice when I first picked up a Vaporesso device, I'd say:

  • Be patient with new coils - proper priming and breaking in at lower wattages pays off
  • Match your e-liquid to your pod/coil resistance for best results
  • Clean your devices regularly, especially the connection points
  • Take advantage of Vaporesso's smart features instead of trying to outsmart them
  • Experiment with airflow settings to find your perfect draw
  • Don't cheap out on batteries for mods that use replaceable cells
  • Try all the different pods before settling on your favourite - what works for others might not work for you

If you're just starting out with Vaporesso, try our XROS 4 Mini - it's affordable at £17.99 and gives you all the core features that make Vaporesso great.

If you want something with more features, the XROS 4 Nano with its colour screen and bigger battery might be more your style.

For those looking for a proper mod experience, you can't go wrong with anything from the Gen series - they're built solid and perform brilliantly with a wide range of tanks.
