What Are Vape Coils?

Vape coils are the small parts inside your vape tank or pod that heat up your vape juice and then turn it into vapour. These are made from small pieces of metal wire wrapped in cotton. Pressing the fire button on your vape kit or simply inhaling will then cause the coil to heat the cotton that you’ve pre-soaked in liquid which will then produce your flavour and vapour.

Coils don’t last forever, though. After a bit of use, the flavour starts to fade or you might get a burnt taste - that’s your sign it’s time to swap it out. Pop in a fresh coil, and your vape will taste just like new again.

Vape Coils can vary in shapes and sizes, but are typically the smallest component to your vape setup. You can get stock coils, which are straight out the packet with a push fit design to pop into your vape tank or refillable empty pod. And then there's premade or handmade coils, which are popular for rebuildable vaping, where you then thread cotton strips through the inner diameter of the coil to then create your preferred build in an RTA, RDA or RDTA.

Types of Vape Coils

Not all coils are built the same, so here’s a quick breakdown of the main types:
MTL Coils (Mouth to Lung)
Made for that cigarette-style inhale. Higher resistance, lower power, and best with 50/50 juice or nic salts. Ideal for new vapers or those who prefer a subtle draw.
DTL Coils (Direct to Lung)
These offer a looser, deeper inhale with lower resistance. Perfect for high VG juice, bold flavour, and thick clouds.
Mesh Coils
Mesh coils heat faster and more evenly using a mesh strip instead of wire. That means better flavour, smoother draws, and longer coil life — now a go-to in most modern kits.
Ceramic Coils
These use a ceramic surface to heat e-liquid, giving a cleaner, more consistent vape. They last longer and handle thicker liquids well, though they’re less common than mesh.

Vape Coil Brands and Compatibility

Every vape kit has its own set of compatible vape coils, there is no one size fits all, so it’s really important to get the right coil for your device. For example, if you’ve got a Voopoo Drag, you’re probably looking for PnP X or TPP coils. Running an Aspire Nautilus tank? You’ll need Nautilus BVC coils.

Not sure which coil you need? Have a look at your tank or pod - it usually has the name printed on it. Or check your old coil before throwing it out; most of them have the name and resistance stamped on the side. Still stuck? Drop us a message - we’ve all been there. We have tonnes of popular brands like Voopoo Coils, Vaporesso Coils, Geekvape Coils & more!

When Should You Change Your Coil?

Here’s the honest truth: once your vape tastes off, it’s probably time. You might notice burnt flavour, dull taste, less vapour, or even a bit of gurgling or leaking. That’s your coil giving up. For more information, check out our 'All about Coils' blog.

Most people swap their coils every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how often they vape and what kind of juice they use. Sweeter or darker e-liquids wear out coils faster. So if you’re noticing that caramel flavour going from sweet to sickly, that coil’s ready for the bin.

Before popping in a new coil, make sure to prime it - add a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton and let it sit in your filled tank for a few minutes. That helps prevent dry hits right off the bat. For more information on how to correctly prime your coil - check out our coil priming guide.

Vape Coil FAQ’s

What does a vape coil do?

A vape coil heats up your e-liquid and turns it into vapour. This is the core component responsible for flavour and cloud production.

How often should I change my vape coil?

Most coils last between 5 and 14 days, depending on how often you vape, your wattage settings, and the type of liquid you’re using.

What are the signs my coil needs replacing?

You’ll notice a burnt taste, weaker flavour, reduced vapour, or gurgling noises when the coil starts to wear out

Do all vape kits use the same coils?

No. Coils are usually specific to the brand or model of your tank or pod, so always check compatibility before buying.

What’s the difference between mesh and regular coils?

Mesh coils heat more evenly and have a larger surface area, which often means better flavour and smoother vapour.

Do I need to prime a new coil before using it?

Yes. Adding a few drops of e-liquid to the coil and letting it sit in a full tank for several minutes helps prevent dry hits.

Can I clean and reuse a vape coil?

Some people rinse and reuse coils, but it’s usually a short-term fix – performance won’t be as good as with a fresh one.

What wattage should I vape my coil at?

Always follow the recommended wattage printed on the coil; going too high can burn it out quickly, and too low might mute the flavour.
