Vape Tanks

A vape tank is the part of your setup that holds e-liquid and houses the vape coil. When you fire your mod, the coil heats up and turns the liquid into vapor. The tank then delivers that tank vapor through the drip tip to your mouth.

Most vape tanks connect to your mod using a 510 thread. This universal fitting means you can mix and match tanks and box mod vapes from different brands. A Geekvape Zeus tank works fine on a Voopoo mod, for example.

Inside a typical tank vape setup you'll find a few key parts. The glass section holds your e-liquid. The coil sits in the base and does the heating. The top cap opens for refilling. The drip tip is where you put your lips. And the airflow ring lets you adjust how tight or airy the draw feels.

Tank capacity in the UK is capped at 2ml under TPD rules, though many vape tanks can take a bubble glass that increases capacity slightly.

Sub-Ohm Tanks

Sub-ohm tanks run coils with resistance below 1.0 ohm, usually between 0.15Ω and 0.5Ω. They're built for direct-to-lung vaping at higher wattages, producing dense clouds and bold flavour. Most sub-ohm vape tanks use mesh coils now, which heat more evenly and last longer than older wire coils.

Adjustable airflow is standard on these tanks, letting you fine-tune the draw from slightly restricted to wide open. Pair a sub-ohm tank vape with high VG e-liquids at 3mg or 6mg nicotine for best results.

MTL Tanks

MTL tanks are built for mouth-to-lung vaping. The draw is tighter, the tank vapor is cooler, and the experience feels closer to smoking a cigarette. Coil resistance sits above 1.0 ohm, usually between 1.0Ω and 1.8Ω, and wattage stays low.

MTL vape tanks work best with 50/50 e-liquids or nic salts in higher strengths like 10mg or 20mg. The restricted airflow and lower power mean each puff delivers concentrated flavour with a satisfying throat hit, without massive clouds. The smooth, warm vape makes MTL tanks popular with ex-smokers making the switch from cigarettes.

RTA Tanks (Rebuildable Tank Atomisers)

RTA tanks let you build and install your own coils rather than buying pre-made coil heads. The deck sits inside the tank, and you wrap your wire, wick with cotton, then fill the tank and vape as normal.

Building your own coils gives you full control over resistance, ramp-up time and flavour. It also saves money long-term since wire and cotton cost far less than replacement coil heads. RTAs suit vapers who enjoy the hands-on side of the hobby.

MTL RTA Tanks

RDA Tanks (Rebuildable Dripping Atomisers)

RDAs have no tank section at all. You build your coil on an open deck, drip e-liquid directly onto the cotton, and vape until it runs dry. Then you drip again. It's hands-on vaping at its purest.

Because the coil sits so close to your mouth with no glass in between, RDAs deliver the most intense flavour of any tank vape style. Cloud production is massive too. The trade-off is convenience. You'll need to carry a bottle of e-liquid and re-drip every 10-15 puffs.

RDAs are popular with hobbyists and flavour chasers who enjoy building exotic coils. Hellvape and Vandy Vape lead this category.

RDTA Tanks (Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomisers)

RDTAs combine the best of RTAs and RDAs. You get a rebuildable deck with the flavour benefits of dripping, plus a tank section below that feeds liquid up to the cotton. Less dripping, same great taste.

The deck sits on top of the vape tank rather than inside it. Wicks hang down into the reservoir and draw liquid up as you vape. You still build and wick like an RDA, but the tank holds your juice so you don't need to keep dripping.

RDTAs suit vapers who want RDA-level flavour with better capacity and less fuss.

RBA and Boro Tanks

RBA (Rebuildable Atomiser) is a broad term covering any rebuildable deck. Boro tanks are a specific style that uses a standardised "Billet Box" format or Dotmod system. These compact rebuildables fit into certain devices and have developed a dedicated following among hobbyist vapers.

Top Fill vs Bottom Fill

Top fill tanks are easier to refill. You slide or unscrew the top cap and pour liquid into a slot. Bottom fill tanks need you to unscrew the base, which can get messy. Almost all modern vape tanks use top fill now.

Coil Compatibility

Check which coils your tank uses and how easy they are to find. Popular tanks from Geekvape, Voopoo and Vaporesso use widely available coils. Some tanks share coil compatibility across ranges, which gives you more options.

Capacity

UK TPD rules limit vape tank capacity to 2ml. Many tanks have the ability to purchase a bubble glass that adds a bit more room. If capacity matters, look for tanks that have this option.
