What is a Vape Tank?

What is a Vape Tank?

A vape tank is the part of your setup that holds e-liquid and houses the vape coil. When you fire your mod, the coil heats up and turns the liquid into vapor. The tank then delivers that tank vapor through the drip tip to your mouth.

Most vape tanks connect to your mod using a 510 thread. This universal fitting means you can mix and match tanks and box mod vapes from different brands. A Geekvape Zeus tank works fine on a Voopoo mod, for example.

Inside a typical tank vape setup you'll find a few key parts. The glass section holds your e-liquid. The coil sits in the base and does the heating. The top cap opens for refilling. The drip tip is where you put your lips. And the airflow ring lets you adjust how tight or airy the draw feels.

Tank capacity in the UK is capped at 2ml under TPD rules, though many vape tanks can take a bubble glass that increases capacity slightly.

Types of Vape Tanks

Types of Vape Tanks

Vape tanks split into categories based on vaping style and how the coil is set up. Here's what each type offers.

Sub-Ohm Tanks

Sub-ohm tanks run coils with resistance below 1.0 ohm, usually between 0.15Ω and 0.5Ω. They're built for direct-to-lung vaping at higher wattages, producing dense clouds and bold flavour. Most sub-ohm vape tanks use mesh coils now, which heat more evenly and last longer than older wire coils.

Adjustable airflow is standard on these tanks, letting you fine-tune the draw from slightly restricted to wide open. Pair a sub-ohm tank vape with high VG e-liquids at 3mg or 6mg nicotine for best results.

Top sub-ohm tank brands we stock include Geekvape (Zeus), Voopoo , Vaporesso (iTank) and Uwell (Valyrian). These reliable tanks suit both intermediate vapers and advanced vapers looking for a hassle-free sub-ohm setup.

MTL Tanks

MTL tanks are built for mouth-to-lung vaping. The draw is tighter, the tank vapor is cooler, and the experience feels closer to smoking a cigarette. Coil resistance sits above 1.0 ohm, usually between 1.0Ω and 1.8Ω, and wattage stays low.

MTL vape tanks work best with 50/50 e-liquids or nic salts in higher strengths like 10mg or 20mg. The restricted airflow and lower power mean each puff delivers concentrated flavour with a satisfying throat hit, without massive clouds. The smooth, warm vape makes MTL tanks popular with ex-smokers making the switch from cigarettes.

Popular MTL tanks come from Aspire (Nautilus), Vaporesso and Innokin.

RTA Tanks (Rebuildable Tank Atomisers)

RTA tanks let you build and install your own coils rather than buying pre-made coil heads. The deck sits inside the tank, and you wrap your wire, wick with cotton, then fill the tank and vape as normal.

Building your own coils gives you full control over resistance, ramp-up time and flavour. It also saves money long-term since wire and cotton cost far less than replacement coil heads. RTAs suit vapers who enjoy the hands-on side of the hobby.

We stock RTA vape tanks from Hellvape,Early Birds and ThunderCloud. Options range from single-coil flavour tanks to dual-coil cloud machines.

MTL RTA Tanks

MTL RTAs combine rebuildable decks with tight, cigarette-style airflow. You get the cost savings and customisation of building your own coils, but with the restricted draw that MTL vapers prefer.

These vape tanks suit experienced vapers who've moved past pre-built coils but still want that mouth-to-lung hit. The decks are usually smaller and easier to build on than full-size RTAs.

Brands like Hellvape and Ambition mods make some excellent MTL RTA options.

RDA Tanks (Rebuildable Dripping Atomisers)

RDAs have no tank section at all. You build your coil on an open deck, drip e-liquid directly onto the cotton, and vape until it runs dry. Then you drip again. It's hands-on vaping at its purest.

Because the coil sits so close to your mouth with no glass in between, RDAs deliver the most intense flavour of any tank vape style. Cloud production is massive too. The trade-off is convenience. You'll need to carry a bottle of e-liquid and re-drip every 10-15 puffs.

RDAs are popular with hobbyists and flavour chasers who enjoy building exotic coils. Hellvape and Vandy Vape lead this category.

RDTA Tanks (Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomisers)

RDTAs combine the best of RTAs and RDAs. You get a rebuildable deck with the flavour benefits of dripping, plus a tank section below that feeds liquid up to the cotton. Less dripping, same great taste.

The deck sits on top of the vape tank rather than inside it. Wicks hang down into the reservoir and draw liquid up as you vape. You still build and wick like an RDA, but the tank holds your juice so you don't need to keep dripping.

RDTAs suit vapers who want RDA-level flavour with better capacity and less fuss.

RBA and Boro Tanks

RBA (Rebuildable Atomiser) is a broad term covering any rebuildable deck. Boro tanks are a specific style that uses a standardised "Billet Box" format or Dotmod system. These compact rebuildables fit into certain devices and have developed a dedicated following among hobbyist vapers.

We stock a growing range of RBA and Boro tank vape options for vapers who want something outside the mainstream.

Choosing the Right Vape Tank

Choosing the Right Vape Tank

The right tank depends on how you vape and what matters most to you.

For Big Clouds

Go with a sub-ohm tank running mesh coils. Look for wide airflow, low resistance (0.15Ω to 0.3Ω) and compatibility with 70W+ wattages. The Geekvape Zeus, Voopoo TPP X and Uwell Valyrian are solid choices for dense tank vapor.

For Flavour

Both sub-ohm mesh tanks and RTAs deliver excellent flavour. If you want simplicity, a mesh sub-ohm vape tank works well. If you prefer customisation and don't mind building, an RTA or RDA will give you more control over the vape.

For Ex-Smokers and MTL Vapers

Choose an MTL tank with tight airflow and coils above 1.0 ohm. The Aspire Nautilus series is a long-standing favourite. For rebuildable MTL, look at MTL RTAs from Hellvape or Vandy Vape. These tanks deliver the throat hit and draw that helps ex-smokers transition away from cigarettes.

For Hobbyists and Builders

RTAs, RDAs and RDTAs are your territory. If you're ready to upgrade from pre-built coils and step up to rebuildables, start with a single-coil RTA. Move to dual-coil RTAs or RDAs once you're comfortable. We stock everything from entry-level rebuildables to high-end tank vape options from Hellvape, Early Birds and Thunder Cloud.

Tank Features to Consider

Tank Features to Consider

Airflow

Adjustable airflow lets you control how tight or airy the draw feels. More airflow means bigger clouds but can dilute flavour. Less airflow gives a tighter, more intense hit. Most vape tanks have an airflow ring at the base you can twist to adjust.

Top Fill vs Bottom Fill

Top fill tanks are easier to refill. You slide or unscrew the top cap and pour liquid into a slot. Bottom fill tanks need you to unscrew the base, which can get messy. Almost all modern vape tanks use top fill now.

Coil Compatibility

Check which coils your tank uses and how easy they are to find. Popular tanks from Geekvape, Voopoo and Vaporesso use widely available coils. Some tanks share coil compatibility across ranges, which gives you more options.

Capacity

UK TPD rules limit vape tank capacity to 2ml. Many tanks have the ability to purchase a bubble glass that adds a bit more room. If capacity matters, look for tanks that have this option.

Build Quality

Stainless steel construction, quality glass and sturdy threading all affect how long your tank lasts. Brands like Geekvape, Hellvape and Lost Vape are known for solid build quality that stands up to daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vape tank?

It's the bit that holds your e-liquid and contains the coil. Screw it onto your mod, fill it up, and the coil heats the liquid into vapour when you fire. Most use a 510 thread so they fit pretty much any mod.

What's the difference between MTL and DTL tanks?

MTL means mouth-to-lung. You draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale. Tight airflow, feels like a cigarette. DTL is direct-to-lung. Big open airflow, you breathe it straight down. More clouds, less throat hit. Ex-smokers usually start with MTL.

Are all vape tanks compatible with any mod?

If it's got a 510 connection, it'll physically screw on. But wattage matters too. Sub-ohm tanks need 40-100W+. MTL tanks run at 10-20W. Stick a sub-ohm tank on a weak mod and you'll get a rubbish vape. Check the coil's recommended wattage before you pair them.

What is an RTA tank?

Rebuildable Tank Atomiser. Instead of buying coil heads, you wrap your own coils from wire and wick them with cotton. Takes a bit of learning but saves money and lets you tweak your vape exactly how you want it. The tank still holds liquid like normal.

What is an RDA?

Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser. No tank at all. You build a coil on an open deck, drip juice onto the cotton, vape it dry, then drip again. Bit of a faff but nothing beats an RDA for flavour. Hobbyist territory.

What is an RDTA?

Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomiser. Best of both worlds. You've got an RDA-style deck on top with a tank underneath. Wicks hang down into the juice so you don't need to keep dripping. Same flavour, less hassle.

What's the best vape tank for beginners?

Something with pre-made coils. The Geekvape Zeus or Voopoo TPP are solid. Easy to fill, coils are everywhere, not much to go wrong. If you want MTL, the Aspire Nautilus has been around for years and still works brilliantly. Leave rebuildables until you've got the basics down.

What's the best vape tank for flavour?

RDAs win on pure flavour because the coil's right under your mouth with nothing in the way. If you don't fancy dripping, a single-coil RTA or a decent mesh sub-ohm tank gets you close. Mesh heats evenly which helps with flavour.

What's the best tank vape for clouds?

Sub-ohm with mesh coils and wide airflow. Low resistance like 0.15Ω, crank the watts up to 80W+, and you'll chuck clouds. Dual-coil RTAs and RDAs go even bigger if you're into building.

How often should I change my tank coil?

Depends how much you vape. Most people get a week or two from a coil. Sweet liquids gunk them up faster. When the flavour goes off or you get a burnt taste, swap it out. If you're rebuilding, the coil wire lasts ages but you'll re-wick every few days.

Why is my vape tank leaking?

Usually it's overfilling, a loose coil, or knackered o-rings. Check the coil's screwed in tight. Look at the rubber seals and replace any that are worn. Don't fill past the max line. And close the airflow when you're filling or liquid can flood through.

How do I fill my vape tank?

Most are top fill now. Slide or unscrew the top cap, tilt the tank, and pour liquid down the inside of the glass. Avoid getting it down the centre tube or it'll flood. Fill to the line, put the cap back, then wait five minutes before vaping so the cotton soaks through.

Can I use any e-liquid in my vape tank?

Not really. Sub-ohm tanks want thick high VG juice, 70/30 or higher, at low nicotine like 3mg or 6mg. MTL tanks work better with thinner 50/50 liquid or nic salts at 10mg-20mg. Wrong ratio and you'll get dry hits, flooding, or spitback.

How do I clean my vape tank?

Take it apart, pull the coil out, and rinse everything under warm water. Let it dry completely before you put it back together. If there's gunk built up, soak the parts in vodka for an hour then rinse. Worth doing every time you change flavours.

What does 510 connection mean?

It's the thread that screws your tank onto your mod. Called 510 because it's got 10 threads at 5mm. Pretty much every tank and mod uses this now, so you can mix and match brands. Your Geekvape tank will fit on a Voopoo mod, no problem.

Do I need a rebuildable tank?

Only if you want one. Plenty of vapers stick with pre-made coils forever and that's fine. Rebuildables suit people who like tinkering, want to save money on coils, or chase a specific vape. If convenience matters more, stick with coil heads.
