Vaporesso XROS Mini Retro Pod Vape Kit

The XROS Mini Retro is the small, button-free end of the Vaporesso XROS range. There is nothing to set: you draw on it and it fires, and the wattage is fixed at 18W.

A 1000mAh battery sits in a body 98.9mm tall and 38.3g on the scales, which is why it suits a pocket rather than a desk. Eight colours, and the styling is where the name comes from.

One thing matters more than the styling, and it is the reason to read on: this kit takes most XROS pods but not the 0.4 ohm. Vaporesso say so themselves, and it is the single most common mistake made when buying pods for it.

Instant Auto Draw

Instant Auto Draw is Vaporesso's name for it, and there is no fire button anywhere on the kit. You take the pod off, fill it, put it back and inhale. Nothing to hold, nothing to click five times, nothing to set. For anyone moving across from cigarettes that is the whole appeal, and it is the main thing separating this from the kits further up the range.

COREX 3.0 Mesh Pods

COREX 3.0 is the current generation of Vaporesso's mesh coil, and the pods on this kit use it. The mesh sits inside a 2ml pod that fills from the top, and the coil cannot be changed on its own: when the flavour drops off you replace the whole pod. That keeps it simple and it is why there are no coils to buy alongside the kit.

SSS 2.0 Leak Resistance

SSS 2.0 is the sealed structure underneath the coil in the pod. It is there to catch the condensation that otherwise collects in the airflow channel and ends up on your hand or in your pocket. It is not a promise that a pod can never leak, but it is the part doing the work when one does not.

Which XROS Pods Fit the Mini Retro

Most of them, with one exception that catches people out. Vaporesso list the Mini Retro as taking XROS pods excluding the 0.4 ohm.

Both pod generations fit the same way, so the COREX 3.0 pod and the older COREX 2.0 are both options as long as you stay off the 0.4 ohm. If you have bought a 0.4 ohm for another XROS kit, it will not work here.

Is the XROS Mini Retro Mouth to Lung?

Yes. Vaporesso call it an 18W MTL device, and every pod it will take sits at 0.6 ohm or above. In our view the 0.6 and 0.8 ohm pods give the looser, RDL style draw, and the 1.0 and 1.2 ohm the tightest mouth to lung. The 0.4 ohm pod, which is the restricted lung option in the XROS range, is the one Vaporesso exclude from this kit.

That makes it a cigarette-style vape rather than a cloud one, and it is why a nic salt juice suits it better than anything thicker.

Can You Put Any E-Liquid In It?

Not quite any. The pods are mesh coils in the 0.6 to 1.2 ohm range, so they want a thinner e-liquid that can soak into the wick.

• Nic salt at 10mg or 20mg: the usual choice, and what most people fill it with
• 50/50 freebase: works across all four resistances
• High VG shortfill: too thick, and it will dry the coil out and taste burnt

The tighter the pod, the stronger the nicotine tends to be. On the 1.0 and 1.2 ohm most people go to 20mg, on the 0.6 ohm 10mg is usually enough.

How Long the Battery Lasts

Vaporesso do not publish a day figure for the Mini Retro, so here is the arithmetic instead of a guess. At 1000mAh and a fixed 18W, this is a light-use battery: most people charge it daily, and a heavy vaper will charge it before the day is out.

Charging is Type-C at 5V/1A, which is the slower of the two rates Vaporesso use across the XROS range. The four LEDs tell you roughly where you are rather than giving a percentage.

If a full day between charges matters more than size, the XROS 6 Mini carries 1600mAh and Vaporesso rate it at up to four days.

They all take the same pods, give or take the 0.4 ohm exception, so the choice comes down to battery, power and whether you want a screen.

Pick the Mini Retro if you want the smallest and simplest of the three and you vape mouth to lung. Pick one of the others if you want the 0.4 ohm pod, a bigger battery, or control over the wattage.

Filling the Mini Retro

The XROS pod fills from the top. Four steps:

1. Lift the pod off the kit.
2. Snap off the mouthpiece.
3. Squeeze the e-liquid in through the filling hole, stopping short of the top rather than overfilling.
4. Put the mouthpiece back, make sure it is shut firmly, and stand the pod five minutes before the first draw.

That five minutes is what stops a new pod tasting burnt. The wick needs to take the e-liquid up before any power reaches it.
