Vaporesso Luxe XR Max 2 vs Luxe XR Max: Every Difference Compared

The Luxe XR Max 2 is the newer version of Vaporesso's Luxe XR Max. It gets a few upgrades, including a bigger battery (3200mAh vs. 2800mAh), a bigger 0.96 inch TFT screen, PULSE and ECO modes, a separate lock button, and a DTL pod and an MTL pod in the box.

The AXON chip, the 80W maximum, the USB-C charging and the pods each kit takes are the same.

I have gone through every difference below using Vaporesso's own product pages and manuals, and at the end I tell you which one I would pick and why.

Comparing the Batteries and Charging

The Luxe XR Max 2 has a 3200mAh battery compared to 2800mAh in the original XR Max. Vaporesso put that at 14% more capacity, and call it the longest battery life in the Luxe X family.

Vaporesso do not give a battery life in hours for the Max 2. For the original, they only say it will see you through a whole day of DTL vaping. In my view it comes down to wattage: the 0.2Ω coil at 45 to 60W will drain either kit far quicker than the 0.8Ω coil at 12 to 16W. On the Max 2, Vaporesso also say ECO mode lasts longer than PULSE mode.

Charging is the same on both: USB-C at 5V/2A. Neither manual gives a full charge time, but both kits show the remaining charge time on screen while plugged in.

Screen and Menu Differences

In my view, the screen and menu features are the biggest visible changes between the Luxe XR Max 2 and the Luxe XR Max.

The original has a 0.54 inch OLED screen that shows the battery level, wattage and puff count, with the puff count switching to vaping time while you vape.

The Max 2 has a 0.96 inch TFT screen that shows more: battery level, vape mode, wattage, coil resistance, a lock icon and your puffs. You get three themes (NEBULA, VITAL and WAVE), and the brightness goes from 10 to 100 in the settings.

The menu is quicker to reach too. On the Max 2 you click the power button twice within 2 seconds. On the original it is 4 clicks.

What Is PULSE Mode on the Luxe XR Max 2?

PULSE is a new mode on the Max 2, and so is ECO. The original only has SMART mode, which you turn on or off in the menu.

• PULSE: Vaporesso describe it as constant voltage output, delivering flavour, throat hit and vapour continuously. They also say it slows down flavour loss.
• ECO: a normal wattage mode where you set the wattage for your coil yourself. Vaporesso say it lasts longer than PULSE.
• SMART: on both kits. With a pod fitted, it recommends the best wattage for the coil. On the original, Vaporesso say it also keeps the wattage inside the recommended range.

My advice: if flavour dropping off near the end of a charge bugs you, try PULSE. If battery life matters more, use ECO.

Does the Luxe XR Max 2 Have Auto Draw?

No. Both kits fire on the button. Vaporesso's manuals for both say to press the power button to vape, and neither the manuals nor the product pages mention draw activation.

If you want a kit that fires when you inhale, the Vaporesso XROS range is where I would look. The XROS 6, for example, fires on the button or the draw.

How Do You Lock and Unlock the Luxe XR Max 2?

The Max 2 adds a separate lock button, which Vaporesso say stops accidental touches, and a LOCK icon on the screen. Vaporesso show no lock button on the original.

The touch buttons that change the wattage work the same way on both kits:

1. Click the power button 3 times within 2 seconds to unlock the touch buttons.
2. Use the touch buttons to change the wattage.
3. Click the power button once to confirm.

To turn either kit on or off, click the power button 5 times within 2 seconds. If yours still will not respond, our Vaporesso troubleshooting guide covers the common fixes.

Do Luxe XR Max Pods and Coils Fit the Max 2?

Yes. Both kits take Luxe XR pods with GTX coils, and Luxe X pods with the coil built in. So if you are upgrading, your pods and coils carry over from the Max to the Max 2.

What is in the box has changed. In the UK kits:

• Luxe XR Max: a 2ml DTL pod, a GTX 0.2Ω Mesh coil and a GTX 0.4Ω Mesh coil. Vaporesso's product page lists one pod, but their sales flyer for the UK version shows a DTL pod and an RDL pod.
• Luxe XR Max 2: a 2ml DTL pod with a GTX 0.2Ω Dual Mesh coil fitted, and a 2ml MTL pod with a GTX 0.8Ω Mesh coil fitted.

Vaporesso suggest 45 to 60W for the 0.2Ω coils, 26 to 32W for the 0.4Ω Mesh and 12 to 16W for the 0.8Ω Mesh.

Vaporesso call the second pod the MTL pod. In my view a 0.8Ω coil sits in the RDL sweet spot, and for a tight MTL draw I would go for a 1.2Ω coil, which Vaporesso list for the same pod.

Vaporesso list 0.15 to 0.6Ω coils for the DTL pod and 0.6 to 1.2Ω coils for the MTL pod. Spare Luxe XR pods fit both kits.

The dual mesh coil works in the original too, going by Vaporesso's GTX coil page, which covers the dual mesh coils and lists the Luxe XR Max as compatible. Our Vaporesso GTX coils fit both kits.

Would rather not change coils at all? The Luxe X pods have the coil built in and fit both kits.

Filling is the same on both. Take the pod out, pull the silicone plug from the bottom, fill through the hole and push the plug back in firmly. Both manuals say to wait 5 minutes before vaping so the coil can soak.

Size, Weight and Colours

Vaporesso say the Max 2 adds battery without adding size, but on their own figures it is a touch bigger that the original Luxe XR Max: 108mm tall against 106.5mm, and 26.4mm deep against 26mm. The width is the same at 32.1mm.

The Max 2 weighs 117g. Vaporesso do not publish a weight for the original.

The Vaporesso Luxe XR Max came in 14 colour finishes in total, compared to 12 for the XR Max 2. 

Vaporesso list the Max 2's 12 finishes as:

• Black, Red, Blue, Silver, Storm Blue, Flowing Purple, Cloud Pink and Fog Gold.
• Leather: Imperial Red Leather, Dark Black Leather, Gray Leather and Mocha Leather.

The original came in 10 colours plus a Leather Edition in 4 more.

Luxe XR Max or Luxe XR Max 2: Which Should You Buy?

My advice:

• Buying new? Get the Max 2. You get the bigger battery, the bigger screen, PULSE and ECO, the lock button, and a DTL and an MTL pod in the box, so you can try both styles straight away.
• Already have the original and it works? There is no rush. Your pods and coils fit the Max 2 when the time comes, and the dual mesh coil already fits the kit you have.
• Want PULSE mode or a lock button? Only the Max 2 has them.
• Want a kit that fires when you inhale? Neither. Look at the XROS 6 instead.
