Vaping Abroad: The Rules for Every Country
Taking your vape on holiday? Some countries welcome it, some regulate it, and a few will fine or even jail you for carrying one. Search your destination, island or resort below for its current vaping laws, then check the UK airport and hand-luggage rules before you fly.
Can you take a vape abroad?
It depends entirely on where you are going. In most of Europe, the US, the UAE and much of the world you can carry your own vape for personal use with no problem. But a growing list of countries ban vapes outright, and a few will fine or even jail you for bringing one through customs. Search your destination below, then check the UK airport and hand-luggage rules before you fly.
Before you fly: UK airport and luggage rules
You can carry your vape in your hand luggage, but the device and any spare batteries must stay in the cabin, never in the hold. E-liquid counts as a liquid at security. Most UK airports still use the 100 ml per container rule with a 1-litre clear bag, but Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and Birmingham now allow containers up to 2 litres with their new scanners, while Luton and Manchester keep the 100 ml rule. Check both your departure and arrival airports, as the rules differ. You cannot vape or charge a device on the plane.
Find your country
How we research this: banned and restricted countries are based on current national laws and enforcement (see sources below). Countries shown as legal are generally permitted, but rules on where you can vape and what you can buy vary, so we flag them to check locally rather than guarantee specifics. If a country is not listed, treat it as check-locally and follow official advice.

Where can you vape in the UK?
Vaping is not covered by the UK smoking ban, which only applies to tobacco, so where you can vape indoors is decided by each venue, not the law. As a rule:
- Pubs, bars and restaurants usually do not allow vaping indoors, though some permit it in beer gardens. Ask staff first.
- Hotels mostly treat vaping like smoking, so it is banned in rooms and can bring a cleaning charge. Check the hotel's policy.
- Workplaces are not covered by a national vaping ban, but most employers ban indoor vaping under their own rules and offer a designated area.
- Trains, buses, the Underground and stations ban vaping under the operator's rules.
- Planes ban vaping and charging in the air.
- Hospitals and schools ban vaping on their grounds.
Abroad, outdoor rules vary too. Some countries and resorts fine vaping on beaches or in public areas, so check the country above and any local signs.
