Does e-liquid expire?

Most e-liquid carries a best-before date, usually one to two years from when it was made (some last up to three). But here is the honest truth: that date is a manufacturer-set quality guideline, much like the best-before on food, and it is about quality, not safety. E-liquid shelf life is not tightly regulated in the UK, and a sealed bottle stored properly often lasts well beyond its printed date. So a bottle that is a few years old is usually still fine to vape, which is why plenty of vapers happily use liquid they have had stored for years.

What actually changes over time is the flavour and the nicotine. Flavour slowly fades, and nicotine gradually oxidises, so an old bottle can taste a little muted and the nicotine may darken in colour and feel slightly harsher or weaker. The PG and VG base is very stable and lasts a long time.

Signs a bottle has gone off

Give an older bottle a look, a sniff and a shake before you use it. Vape it if it seems normal; bin it if you notice:

  • A much darker, deep brown colour than when it was fresh (a slight darkening is normal for nicotine liquid).
  • Separation or a thicker consistency that does not mix back together after a good shake.
  • A sour, chemical or otherwise off smell, or a bad taste.
  • Any floating bits or particles.
Vaping slightly old e-liquid is generally not dangerous - it is just less pleasant. But if in doubt, throw it out. Keep all e-liquid away from children and pets.

How to store e-liquid so it lasts

Storage makes a big difference. To get the longest life out of a bottle: keep it somewhere cool, dark and dry, away from direct sunlight, heat and air; keep the cap sealed tight; and store it upright. For long-term stockpiling, a cupboard is fine, and a fridge or even a freezer will extend life further still - just let it return to room temperature and give it a shake before you vape it.

Stocking up before the 2026 vape tax

From 1 October 2026 the new Vaping Products Duty adds 22p per ml of e-liquid, plus VAT, so about 26p per ml. Because e-liquid keeps for a year or two (longer if stored well), buying a sensible amount before the tax lands can save you money, and shops can keep selling pre-duty stock during a six-month grace period that runs until 1 April 2027. E-liquid has a best-before date that is about quality, not a hard safety expiry like perishable food. Old e-liquid is generally safe to vape; it just may taste muted and the nicotine can darken and feel harsher. Bin it only if it smells off, has separated and won't remix, or has particles in it.
