UK Allowance Checker
UK Duty-Free Allowance Calculator
Coming home from abroad? Check how many cigarettes, how much tobacco and alcohol, and how many vapes and how much e-liquid you can bring into the UK without paying tax or duty. The allowance is the same wherever you are flying back from - Spain, Turkey, Greece, France or anywhere else.
A vape allowance is coming. From 1 October 2026 there will be a separate duty-free allowance for vaping products, so you can bring a small amount of e-liquid and vapes into the UK without paying the new vaping duty. HMRC has confirmed this but has not yet set the exact amount - they will announce it before 1 October 2026. We will update this tool the moment they do. Until then, vapes count towards your general goods allowance below.
1. Tobacco Allowance
You get one tobacco allowance and you can split it across types. Enter what you plan to bring back.
2. Alcohol Allowance
Beer and still wine have their own limits. On top of that you get either spirits or sparkling / fortified wine (you can split those two).
3. Other Goods (Including Vapes and E-liquid)
Everything else, including vapes and e-liquid for now, counts towards one money limit. Enter the total value.
Bringing vapes and e-liquid into the UK
Right now, vapes and e-liquid are not listed as their own allowance. They count towards your general goods allowance of £390 (or £270 if you arrive by private plane or boat), so in practice you can bring a reasonable personal amount home without paying anything, as long as the total value of your goods stays under that limit.
That changes with the new Vaping Products Duty, which starts on 1 October 2026. From that date there will be a dedicated duty-free allowance for vaping products - HMRC has confirmed you will be able to bring a small amount in for personal use without paying the duty or needing a vaping duty stamp. The exact quantity has not been published yet; HMRC says it will confirm it before 1 October 2026. Two things worth knowing now: customs can seize vapes that should have had duty paid on them, just as they do with tobacco, and from 1 April 2027 all vapes sold in the UK must carry a vaping duty stamp.

If you go over your allowance
Allowances work by category. If you go over in one category - say tobacco - you have to declare it and pay tax and duty on the whole amount in that category, not just the part over the limit. So 200 cigarettes and 50 cigars means paying on both, because each is a full allowance on its own. Going over on goods value means paying duty and VAT on the full value. If you have nothing to declare you use the green channel; if you are over, use the red channel or the red-point phone, or declare online before you travel.
Under-17s have no tobacco or alcohol allowance. The figures here are for arrivals into Great Britain; Northern Ireland can differ. Rules can change, so always check GOV.UK before you travel.
Thinking of stocking up on cigarettes instead? Do the maths first
A duty-free run feels like beating the system. It is worth being honest about what it actually saves you, because the numbers are not what most people assume.
Your allowance is about ten days of smoking. Two hundred cigarettes sounds generous, but if you smoke twenty a day it lasts ten days. It is a holiday top-up, not a way to fund a habit. Max out your allowance on two trips a year and you have covered roughly 5% of the cigarettes you will get through, knocking about £250 off an annual bill of more than £6,000. Around a 4% saving, for two flights.
And here is the part that surprises people. Even if every single cigarette you smoked all year cost airport duty-free money, you would still spend more than you would vaping - including the new vaping duty. Duty-free cigarettes work out around 27p each. Vaping on a refillable kit, with the 2026 duty added, comes to roughly £510 a year. Smoking a duty-free-priced twenty a day comes to about £2,000. Vaping wins even in a fantasy where you never pay UK tobacco duty at all.
| If you smoke or vape 20-a-day's worth | Roughly what it costs a year |
|---|---|
| Smoking, normal UK prices (from October 2026) | £6,200 |
| Smoking, with two maxed-out duty-free trips | £5,970 |
| Smoking, if every cigarette were duty-free priced | £2,010 |
| Vaping on a refillable kit, including the 2026 vape duty | £510 |
Estimates. Based on a UK pack at £16.50 to £17, airport duty-free at around £55 per 200, and a vaper getting through about 3ml a day on a refillable setup. Your own numbers will differ - put them into the savings calculator.
There is no loophole, either. Go over your allowance and you have to declare it and pay UK tax and duty on the whole amount in that category, not just the bit over the limit. Bring back commercial quantities and they can be seized. You cannot buy your way out of tobacco duty a carton at a time.
The vape duty is genuinely small by comparison. It works out at about 26p per millilitre once VAT is on it, so a typical vaper pays around 79p a day, roughly £290 a year, in duty. Tobacco duty on twenty a day dwarfs that - and tobacco duty goes up on exactly the same day, 1 October 2026, so the gap between smoking and vaping widens rather than closes. Refilling stays the cheapest way to vape, because coils, pods and kits are not taxed at all - only the liquid is.
None of which is only about money. The NHS is clear that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking and one of the most effective ways to stop, though it is not risk-free and is not for non-smokers. If the duty-free shop is where you were planning to solve the cost of smoking, the honest answer is that switching does it about ten times better.
