How to choose a vape to quit smoking

If you are switching from cigarettes, the right first vape is usually a small mouth-to-lung (MTL) pod kit: it mimics the tight draw of a cigarette and pairs with nic salt e-liquid that satisfies cravings quickly. You do not need big clouds or high power to stop smoking, and in fact lower-powered kits suit new vapers best. For a deeper look at specific devices, see our guides to the best starter kits to quit smoking and the best vapes in the UK. Not sure on nicotine? Use the nicotine strength finder.

The main types of vape kit

Refillable pod / MTL kit

You fill it with your own e-liquid. Cigarette-like draw and the cheapest to run. The most popular choice for switchers.

Prefilled pod kit

Click in a ready-filled pod, no refilling. Simple and tidy, with a cigarette-style hit.

Big puff pod kit

The rechargeable replacement for banned disposables. Easiest switch, thousands of puffs per pod.

Sub-ohm kit

Direct-to-lung clouds and flavour with low-strength shortfills. For experienced vapers, not first-timers.

For most people switching, a mouth-to-lung (MTL) pod kit with 10mg or 20mg nic salt is the best starting point, because the draw feels like a cigarette and the nicotine satisfies cravings. Big puff kits are the easiest if you want no refilling. Use the finder above for a match, and see our best starter kits guide.

A simple beginner pod kit. Look for something pocket-sized, draw-activated or one-button, with easy replacement pods. Avoid high-powered sub-ohm kits at first.

A mouth-to-lung (MTL) kit. The tight airflow and nic salt e-liquid give the closest feel and throat hit to smoking. Prefilled pod kits are a good no-refill option.

Single-use disposables were banned in the UK in June 2025. Big puff pod kits are the rechargeable, refillable replacement and are the easiest switch if you liked disposables.

No. Lower-powered MTL and pod kits are better for quitting, because they use nic salts that satisfy cravings without big clouds. High power is for flavour and clouds, not for stopping smoking.

Vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking but it is not risk-free, and is intended for adult smokers and vapers. If you don't smoke, don't vape. Recommendations are general guidance based on your answers, not medical advice; a specialist vape shop or your local Stop Smoking Service can also help you choose.
