Velo vs ZYN: Which Nicotine Pouch Brand Is Better?

The honest verdict: ZYN is the better brand for new pouch users, because its 1.5mg and 3mg minis are the gentlest on-ramp in the market. Velo is the better brand for strength and flavour choice, going up to 17mg across a much bigger flavour shelf. On price they are identical: £4.99 a tin, every flavour, every strength. We stock both, we sell thousands of tins of each, and neither brand pays us a penny to say any of this. So, here is the full comparison the way a shop that carries both genuinely sees it.

The scorecard

Category Velo ZYN Winner
For beginners 7/10 9/10 ZYN
Strength range 9/10 7/10 Velo
Flavour choice 9/10 7/10 Velo
Pouch comfort 8/10 9/10 ZYN
Value 9/10 9/10 Tie

Strengths: two very different ladders

This is the biggest real difference between the brands, and most comparisons are vague. ZYN's strength ladder starts lower than anything else we sell: 1.5mg and 3mg minis exist purely so a first-timer can learn the format gently, with ZYN slims coming in at 9mg to 13.5mg. Velo starts at 6mg and climbs higher, with 8, 10, 10.9 and 14mg steps on the way to 17mg.

The practical read: if you are new to nicotine or a light user, ZYN has strengths Velo simply does not make, and if you are a heavy user, Velo has a top end ZYN does not reach. The middle, 9 to 11mg, is where they genuinely compete, and there it comes down to flavour and feel. For how both ladders sit against every other brand we stock, our strengths guide maps the whole market.

Flavours: breadth vs polish

Velo wins on sheer choice: around twice as many flavours, with a deep fruit shelf that goes from strawberry and grape to tropical and watermelon, alongside four mints. ZYN's range is smaller and more curated, built around its two celebrated mints. ZYN also boasts properly grown-up Black Cherry, and the one flavour nobody else does well - Coffee.

Broad-brush: fruit-first users tend to land on Velo, mint purists and coffee people tend to land on ZYN. Ultimately, both brands do their mints well enough that a mint lover could live on either. The full tin-by-tin rankings live in our Velo flavours guide and ZYN flavours guide, and where both brands' best place against the whole market is settled in our best nicotine pouches guide.

Pouch feel: the underrated difference

ZYN minis are small, dry pouches that almost disappear under the lip, which is exactly what a beginner or an office user wants. The slims are soft and comfortable at the bigger size. Velo pouches sit between the two ZYN formats: one standard slim size across the range, soft, with a slightly wetter feel and a faster flavour release. None of this shows up on a spec sheet, but it is the thing regular users mention most when they explain why they settled on one brand over the other.

The best of each shelf

If you want to settle it the practical way, buy each brand's best tin and let your own lip decide. These are the two we would hand over the counter:

So which should you buy?

  • Completely new to pouches: ZYN, on the minis. Nothing else starts as gently.
  • Switching from smoking or vaping: either, at 9 to 11mg - pick by flavour. Fruit-first, go Velo. Mint or coffee, go ZYN.
  • Heavy user or ex-snus: Velo, for the 14 and 17mg tins.
  • Undecided: one tin of each of the two above is £9.98 in total and settles it better than any article can.

Both shelves live here: our Velo collection and our ZYN collection, every tin £4.99 with the mg on the label, and free UK delivery over £30 across our nicotine pouches range.

Strengths, flavours and prices reflect our range at the time of writing. Age-restricted products for adults 18 and over; nicotine is addictive; if you do not use nicotine, do not start.

Frequently Asked Questions

ZYN is better for new and light users thanks to its 1.5mg and 3mg minis; Velo is better for strength and flavour choice, going up to 17mg across a bigger range. In the middle strengths it is a flavour preference, not a quality gap.

Velo. Its range reaches 17mg, while ZYN tops out at 13.5mg in our range. ZYN goes lower, though, with minis from 1.5mg.

Yes, £4.99 a tin for every flavour and strength of both brands, with free UK delivery over £30.

They overlap on mints and berries, but each has exclusives: ZYN's Coffee has no Velo equivalent, and Velo's strawberry, grape and tropical range has no ZYN equivalent.
