What Is a Shortfill E-Liquid?

A shortfill e-liquid is a nicotine-free (0mg) bottle filled below the top, leaving room to add your own nic shots. UK law caps nicotine-containing e-liquid at 10ml, so shortfills ship at 0mg in 50ml, 100ml and 200ml bottles. A 50ml shortfill takes one nic shot, a 100ml shortfill takes two and a 200ml shortfill takes four, each finishing at 3mg. The 100ml shortfill is the best value per ml with the widest flavour choice.

Shortfills and the 2026 Vape Tax

From 1 October 2026 the UK's new Vaping Products Duty adds £2.20 of duty per 10ml of e-liquid, around £2.64 with VAT, on every bottle whether it has nicotine or not. On a shortfill the duty falls on the 0mg base and any nic shots you add.

Because the rate is flat per 10ml, the larger bottles see the biggest cash rise, and a 0mg shortfill is taxed the same per ml as a 20mg nic salt. Buying before October locks in pre-duty pricing, and a sealed bottle keeps for 18 to 24 months. Our 2026 vape tax guide has the full timeline.

Open the cap, add two 10ml 18mg nic shots, replace the cap, shake for 30 seconds, leave 5-10 minutes for the flavour to settle. Result: 120ml of 3mg/ml e-liquid.

What's the difference between 50/50 and 70/30 shortfill?

50/50 VG/PG wicks fast for MTL pod kits at 0.6 ohm+. 70/30 VG/PG is thicker, made for sub-ohm tanks at 0.15-0.4 ohm with bigger clouds. Pick by your kit, not the brand.

Which is the best shortfill brand in the UK?
