This calculator caps the finished mix at the UK legal maximum of 20 mg/ml. Add your nicotine as 10 ml nic shots or your own nicotine base, and it works out the VG, PG and flavour around it. If you buy a nicotine-free shortfill and add shots, you are doing exactly what this tool works out, just in a pre-made bottle.

How the e-liquid calculator works

The maths is the same one every mixer uses. Your nicotine volume is your target strength times your batch size, divided by the strength of your nic shot or base. Your flavour volume is the percentage you set. Whatever is left is split between VG and PG to hit your chosen ratio, with the nicotine and flavour already counted towards it. Add it all up and it comes to exactly your batch size.

Worked example: a 50 ml batch at 3 mg/ml, 70% VG, 15% flavour, using 20 mg 50/50 nic shots. That is 7.5 ml of nicotine (equal to 0.75 of a 10 ml shot), 7.5 ml of flavour, 31.25 ml of VG and 3.75 ml of PG. Total 50 ml, landing at 3 mg/ml and 70/30, exactly as set.

UK rules for DIY e-liquid

Nicotine e-liquid sold to consumers in the UK is capped at 20 mg/ml (2%) and 10 ml bottles under the TRPR/TPD rules, and nic shots and nic bases follow the same limits. That is why home mixing is built around nicotine-free shortfills and separate 10 ml nic shots: each part is legal on its own, and you finish the mix at up to 20 mg/ml at home. The finished strength in this calculator is capped at that 20 mg/ml legal limit.

From 1 October 2026 the Vaping Products Duty adds 22p per millilitre plus VAT to all vaping liquid, including your base and nic shots. Mixing your own does not avoid the duty, but it keeps the pre-tax cost of the liquid as low as possible, which is why DIY and longfills remain the cheapest way to vape after the tax.

E-liquid mixing FAQs

It depends on your target strength and batch size. Your nicotine volume is target strength times batch size, divided by the nic shot strength. For a 50 ml mix at 3 mg/ml with 20 mg shots, that is 7.5 ml of nicotine. The calculator works it out for you and shows the number of 10 ml shots.

Higher VG (70/30 and up) gives thicker vapour and a smoother draw, suited to sub-ohm kits. Higher PG (50/50) gives a sharper throat hit and more flavour, suited to MTL pod kits and coils. Match the ratio to your device.

Most concentrates are mixed at 10-20%, but always check the maker's recommended percentage as it varies by brand and flavour. Set that figure in the calculator and it reserves the right amount of space in the bottle.

Not from UK-bought nicotine. Nicotine e-liquid, nic shots and nic bases sold in the UK are capped at 20 mg/ml, so 20 mg is the strongest mix this calculator will build.

Shake it well, then let it stand for a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the flavour. Steeping lets the flavour blend and mature. Fruit mixes are often ready quickly, while desserts and tobaccos usually improve with longer steeping.
