Why Is My Vape Crackling? When It Is Normal and How to Fix It

A light crackle or pop when you take a draw is normal. It is the sound of e-liquid vaporising on the coil, and a vape that never made a sound would not be making vapour. What is not normal is loud, constant crackling with gurgling underneath it, or liquid spitting into your mouth. That's a signal of a flooded coil, and this guide covers the difference and the fixes.

Why vapes crackle at all

The coil in a vape heats liquid held in wet cotton until it turns to vapour, and that state change pops - the same way a wet pan spits on a hob. Thinner 50/50 liquids crackle a little more because they flow into the coil faster, higher wattage crackles louder because more liquid vaporises per second, and a freshly filled pod crackles the most while the cotton settles.

Normal crackle or a problem? The 10-second test

• Light crackle on the draw, clean flavour, normal vapour: working as designed, change nothing
• Loud constant crackle with a wet gurgle: too much liquid where the air should be, the coil is flooding
• Hot liquid spitting into your mouth: flooded coil pushing liquid up the mouthpiece
• Gurgle plus liquid around the pod seat: flooding has moved on to leaking, covered in our leaking guide.

The fixes, in order

1. Draw gently: a hard, sharp pull drags liquid into the coil chamber faster than it can vaporise. Slow and steady is how pod kits are designed to be used
2. Clear the airway: take the pod out, wipe the condensation off its base and out of the pod bay with a dry tissue, and flick the pod gently downwards over a tissue to shift liquid out of the airflow path
3. Check the pod and coil are seated: a pod sitting proud of its bay or a push-fit coil not fully home leaves gaps that liquid can find
4. Do not overfill: liquid needs an air pocket to feed evenly, so stop at the fill line rather than the brim
5. Match the liquid to the coil: thin 50/50 in a low-resistance coil floods it, and every pod listing's table pairs each resistance with the liquid it wicks properly
6. Retire a tired coil: a coil at the end of its life wicks unevenly and gets noisy before it gets burnt. If the pod has weeks of use behind it, swap it rather than nurse it. Our coils guide covers the lifespan signs.

Crackling in prefilled pods

Sealed prefilled pods crackle for the same reason and it is just as normal. A prefilled pod that starts gurgling loudly near the end of its liquid is telling you it is nearly done rather than broken: the last of the liquid moves around a mostly empty pod.

Stopping repeated vape flooding

Four simple habits prevent most flooding.

1. Fill before the pod is empty but never past the line
2. Let a fresh pod stand for several minutes so the cotton saturates evenly, exactly as our priming guide lays out
3. Store the kit upright between sessions, because a kit on its side lets liquid pool in the airway overnight
4. Give the pod bay a wipe when you swap pods.
