Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Every Cause and Its Fix

A burnt taste means the cotton wick inside your coil is dry, or already scorched. When the coil fires without enough liquid in the wick, it burns the cotton instead of vaporising e-liquid, and you taste exactly that. Sometimes the wick just needs a chance to catch up and the fix takes two minutes. Sometimes the cotton is scorched for good and the coil is finished, because a burnt wick never tastes right again. This guide walks through every cause in the order worth checking, the fix for each, and how to stop it coming back.

First, the quick diagnosis

The seven causes, in the order worth checking

1. A new coil that was never primed

The most common cause of all, and the most avoidable. A fresh coil is bone dry, and firing it before the cotton has soaked scorches the wick within seconds. 2. The coil is simply worn out

Coils are consumables. Most last one to two weeks of normal vaping, and the end of a coil's life tastes exactly like this: flavour goes dull first, then the burnt edge creeps in. If your coil has been in for a fortnight or more, stop troubleshooting - it owes you nothing. 3. Chain vaping

Every puff pulls liquid out of the wick, and the wick refills by soaking - which takes a few seconds. Vape fast enough for long enough and the wick falls behind, fires half dry, and starts to catch. If the burnt edge shows up mid-session, put the kit down for a minute and let the cotton catch up. If your sessions are always like this, a higher-capacity coil or a bigger device handles the pace better than a small pod ever will.

4. Wattage set too high

Every coil has a wattage range, usually printed on its side. Go above it and the coil vaporises liquid faster than the wick can supply it - a dry hit with every puff. Check the number on the coil against the number on your screen, and when in doubt start at the bottom of the range and work up. Adjustable kits make this a ten-second fix.

5. Letting the tank get too low

The wicking ports - the little fabric windows on the side of the coil - need to sit below the liquid line to feed the cotton. Vape a tank or pod nearly dry and the ports are drinking air. If the burnt taste turns up when the liquid is low, that is the whole mystery. Top up before the last quarter and it never happens.

6. E-liquid too thick for the coil

High-VG liquids are thicker and soak into cotton more slowly. A small MTL coil built for 50/50 will struggle to wick a 70/30 shortfill fast enough, and the result is intermittent dry hits even with a full tank. Match the liquid to the coil: 50/50 and nic salts for pod kits and higher-resistance coils, thicker VG blends for sub-ohm hardware built to drink them.

7. Sweetener burning onto the coil

Heavily sweetened dessert and sweet-shop flavours caramelise on the coil as you vape - vapers call it coil gunk, and it is why sweet flavours kill coils faster. The burnt note builds gradually rather than arriving in one puff. No fix exists beyond swapping the coil sooner, and if the pattern annoys you, choose slightly less sweetened liquids for everyday vaping.

Can you fix a burnt coil?

Honestly: no. Once cotton is scorched, the taste is permanent - every trick for reviving a burnt coil ends the same way, with a slightly cleaner coil that still tastes burnt. There are two realistic choices from here:

1. If the coil is young and the burn was mild (a low tank, one hard session), top up, slow down and it may settle to an acceptable taste. 
2. If the taste persists through a full tank, the coil is done. Swap it and fix whichever cause above caused the burn, or the new coil will go the same way.
