Will Vapes Need Removable Batteries? The New Battery Rules Explained

No UK law currently requires vapes to have removable batteries, and no such rule has even been proposed for England, Scotland or Wales yet. What is real is bigger than vaping: a wave of battery law that will require nearly every gadget with a portable battery, phones, tablets, earbuds, toys and power tools included, to have a battery the user can remove and replace.

The EU has dated that rule for 18 February 2027, Northern Ireland follows it directly, and the UK government is expected to consult on its own version. Vapes are simply in the queue with everything else, and probably behind your phone.

This guide grades every claim honestly: what is already law for vape batteries, what is confirmed elsewhere, what is only expected, and what none of it means yet.

What is already law for vape batteries in the UK

Since the disposable ban of June 2025, every vape sold in the UK must be rechargeable, must be refillable or take replacement pods, and where it has a coil, that coil must be removable or replaceable. That is why the whole market moved to the pod kits you see today.

On the waste side, vapes got their own recycling category in August 2025: producers finance collection and recycling, devices carry the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol, and retailers, us included, must offer free takeback so old kits never belong in a household bin. Our recycling and sustainability policy covers how that works when you buy from us.

The battery rule coming for everything else

Here is the part most vape coverage gets backwards: the removable battery push is not a vape crackdown, it is general battery law. The EU Batteries Regulation requires that from 18 February 2027, products with portable batteries placed on the EU market are designed so the end user can remove and replace the battery with commonly available tools.

That covers smartphones, tablets, wireless earbuds, toys and power tools, and the EU spent this summer refining exemptions for categories like wearables, which tells you how live the detail still is.

Northern Ireland follows the EU rule directly under the Windsor Framework, and any UK manufacturer selling into Europe has to meet it regardless of what Britain decides. If the phrase "removable battery" reaches your vape one day, it will have reached your phone first.

Why regulators care so much about batteries

Fires, mostly. Lithium batteries crushed or punctured in bins and waste lorries start fires, and the UK recorded 1,760 battery-linked waste fires in 2025, a 147 percent rise over three years. Vapes thrown in general rubbish are a real slice of that problem, with fire services around the country logging bin lorry blazes started by binned vapes, which is why the recycling rules landed first and why battery design is next on the list.

Whatever you think of the rules, the underlying problem is not invented.

In the meantime, the practical bit sits with all of us: old kits go back to a retailer or a battery recycling point, never in the bin, and our battery and coil safety guide covers safe handling day to day.

What it would mean for vape kits, if Britain follows

Labelling this section clearly: this is informed reading of where things point, not law. If Great Britain mirrors the EU rule, sealed internal batteries in vape kits would eventually give way to designs where the cell comes out, something the hobbyist end of vaping has done for years with removable-cell mods. Kit design would shift the way it shifted after the disposable ban: the industry adapted within months and the vaping experience carried on.

Nothing about liquids, flavours, strengths or the tax is touched by any of this. When a real proposal lands, this page and our law coverage will set out exactly what it says in the same week, and until then we would treat any confident claim about removable vape batteries with suspicion.

Where this comes from

The June 2025 device requirements and the recycling rules are current UK law. The 18 February 2027 removability date comes from the EU Batteries Regulation, which applies in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework. The expected Defra consultation on reformed UK battery rules is reported by compliance bodies but has not launched, and we have marked it as expected rather than confirmed for exactly that reason.

The fire figures come from the electricals recycling industry's own reporting, and they match the rising trend that independent research and national news have tracked for several years, with vape-caused bin lorry fires documented by fire services around the country. Where a date does not exist, we have said so.

Vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking but it is not risk-free, and it is intended for adult smokers and existing vapers. If you do not smoke, do not vape. For free support quitting smoking altogether, visit the NHS stop smoking services.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. No UK law requires it and none has been proposed for Great Britain. Current law requires vapes to be rechargeable, with replaceable pods or refills and a replaceable coil. The removable battery rules that do exist are EU-wide battery law covering phones, earbuds and most portable devices, in force there from 18 February 2027.

Since June 2025 every vape sold must be rechargeable and refillable or pod-based with a replaceable coil, which is what ended disposables. Since August 2025 vapes have their own recycling category: producers fund collection, devices carry the crossed-out bin symbol, and retailers must offer free takeback of old kits.

No, and that is the part most coverage misses. It is general battery law: the EU rule covers smartphones, tablets, wireless earbuds, toys and power tools alongside anything else with a portable battery. If a similar rule reaches Great Britain, it reaches your phone at the same time as your vape.

Never in a household bin. Lithium batteries crushed in waste lorries start fires, and the UK recorded 1,760 battery-linked waste fires in 2025 alone. Take old kits back to a vape retailer, who must accept them free of charge, or to any battery recycling point.
