What Nic Salts Are

Nic salts, also called nicotine salt e-liquids or salt nic, are the smooth, fast-absorbing form of nicotine that powers almost every UK pod kit.

Each one uses nicotine bound with benzoic acid, which lowers the pH so higher strengths stay smooth instead of harsh. That is why nicotine salts have replaced freebase for most pod and MTL vapers.

Are Nic Salts Safe?

A nic salt is no more or less harmful than any other nicotine e-liquid at the same strength. The nicotine is identical; only the form it is carried in changes, so a 20mg nic salt and a 20mg freebase give you the same nicotine.

Nicotine is not where the harm in smoking comes from. The NHS position is that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking because you are not inhaling the tar and carbon monoxide that burning tobacco produces. It is not harmless, and it is intended for adult smokers who want to stop, not for non-smokers or anyone under 18.

Two things are worth knowing about nic salts specifically. Because they absorb faster, it is easier to take in more nicotine without noticing, so if you find yourself vaping constantly it is usually a sign to step down a strength rather than up. And because they are smooth, a 20mg bottle does not feel as strong as it is.

Nic Salt vs Freebase

Freebase gives a stronger throat hit and suits lower strengths in sub-ohm kits; nic salt stays smooth at 20mg and absorbs faster, so cravings settle in minutes rather than tens of minutes.

For a tight MTL pod setup, nic salt is the better match. For big high-VG clouds, a freebase shortfill is the one.

Choose the Right Nicotine Salt Strength

Pick 20mg if you smoked 15 a day or more, 10mg if you smoked up to ten, and 5mg if you were a light or social smoker. All three are capped at 20mg per 10ml under UK TPD rules.

5mg Nic Salt

The lightest option. 5mg suits very light or social smokers, and anyone stepping down from a higher strength while keeping the same flavour.

10mg Nic Salt

A middle-ground strength for lighter smokers, roughly up to ten a day, giving a gentle hit without being overpowering in a pod kit.

20mg Nic Salt

The UK legal maximum and the most popular strength. 20mg is the go-to for heavier ex-smokers and anyone switching straight from a prefilled bar.

Which Kits Nic Salts Work In

Nic salts belong in low-power MTL kits with coils above about 0.8ohm (Ω). That covers almost every refillable pod kit sold in the UK.

Do not put a 20mg nic salt through a sub-ohm coil. The extra power pushes far more nicotine per puff than the strength was designed for, and it will feel harsh. Sub-ohm setups want a low-strength high-VG shortfill instead.

Nic Salts vs Bar Salts

Bar salts are nic salts. The difference is the recipe, not the chemistry: a bar salt is a nic salt made to match the flavour of a specific prefilled bar, so if you liked a particular disposable there is usually a bar salt version of it.

Everything else is the same. Both are 10ml, both are 50/50, both come at 10mg and 20mg, and both fit the same pod kits.
