Are Elf Bars Safe? Elf Bar Safety Guide for UK Vapers

Short answer: Elf Bar vapes sold legally in the UK meet the same rules as every other UK nicotine vape: 20mg/ml nicotine at most, 2ml per pod, a full ingredients list and health warnings on the box, and notification to the MHRA before they go on sale.

They are not risk free, and no vape is. The NHS says nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking and carries a small fraction of the risks of smoking, which is why Elf Bars are meant for adult smokers moving away from cigarettes. If you do not smoke, there is no reason to start.

What Is an Elf Bar Used For?

An Elf Bar is a nicotine vape from the brand of the same name, which has made vapes since 2018. Adult smokers use it as an alternative to cigarettes: it heats a nicotine e-liquid into a vapour you inhale, with no tobacco and no burning.

Since the UK disposable ban, every Elf Bar sold here is rechargeable. Most are prefilled pod kits such as the Elf Bar 600, AF5500, Dual 10K, JoinOne 15 Classic and Plus, where you click in a new pod when one is empty.

Are Elf Bars Bad for You?

Elf Bars are not harmless, but their health risks are far lower than smoking. The NHS puts it plainly: nicotine vaping is not risk free, but it is less harmful than smoking, and most of the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, including tar and carbon monoxide, are not in vape aerosol.

Nicotine itself is addictive, but the NHS says it does not cause cancer, lung disease, heart disease or stroke. Those harms come mainly from the other chemicals in tobacco smoke.

Cancer Research UK says the same: e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco and carry far fewer of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes. Lower risk is not no risk, and the long-term effects of vaping are still being studied.

What Is in an Elf Bar?

Four ingredients make up the e-liquid in a UK Elf Bar pod. Nothing exotic, and the full list has to be printed on the packaging by law.

If a box has no ingredients list, treat it as a fake. If you have already cut nicotine out, there are nicotine free vapes from other brands, as Elf Bar prefilled pods only come in 20mg.

Do Elf Bars Contain Diacetyl?

No. Diacetyl was linked to "popcorn lung" after factory workers breathed in large amounts of it. The NHS says vaping does not cause popcorn lung, and that diacetyl is banned as an ingredient in UK-regulated nicotine vapes and e-liquids.

It is on the MHRA's list of substances not permitted in e-liquids, so a legal UK Elf Bar cannot contain it. Fakes are another matter, as nobody checks what goes into them.

Is ELFLIQ Safe?

ELFLIQ is Elf Bar's own bottled nic salt for refillable kits, and it meets the same UK rules: 10ml bottles, 20mg/ml at most, ingredients and warnings on the label. It comes in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg, so it is also the way to vape Elf Bar flavours at a lower strength.

How Much Nicotine Is in an Elf Bar?

The nicotine content of every Elf Bar prefilled pod sold in the UK is 20mg/ml nicotine salt, which is 2% and the legal maximum, so they are as strong as UK law allows. A 2ml pod at that strength holds about 40mg of nicotine in total. Elf Bar does not make 0mg or 10mg prefilled pods for the UK.

Nic salt is absorbed faster than freebase nicotine, so 20mg gives a quick, firm hit with less throat harshness than freebase at the same strength. That suits heavier smokers, but it can be a lot for a light one.

For a lower strength, a refillable kit with nic salt e-liquids in 5mg or 10mg is the route.

The right choice between 5mg, 10mg and 20mg nic salt usually follows how much you smoked before.

Comparing a pod with a pack is not simple, because how many cigarettes are in a vape depends on how much nicotine each draw delivers and how you vape.

Elf Bar Side Effects

Switching from cigarettes can bring a few side effects while your body adjusts. Most settle down within a week or two.

Coughing and Sore Throat

Common in the first few days, as your throat gets used to vapour instead of smoke. Shorter, gentler draws help. If you are still coughing after a couple of weeks, speak to your GP.

20mg nic salt hits the throat firmly. Moving to a refillable pod kit with a 10mg nic salt takes the edge off if it is too much.

Feeling Sick or Dizzy

That is the nicotine, and it usually means you have vaped more than your body is used to in one go. Chain vaping and long, deep draws are the usual cause. Space your puffs out and drink some water.

If you did not smoke before and an Elf Bar makes you feel rough, that is nicotine reaching a body that is not used to it. These products are for adult smokers, not for starting fresh.

Allergic Reactions

Uncommon, but some people react to propylene glycol with skin irritation, a rash or extra throat discomfort. If something feels wrong after vaping that you do not normally get, stop and talk to your GP.

Elf Bar Overheating and Battery Safety

An Elf Bar getting slightly warm while you vape is normal, because the battery and the coil in the pod both make heat. A kit that gets hot when you are not using it, or keeps firing on its own, is a fault.

Most overheating comes down to fakes, damaged batteries or a kit left in a hot car. Do not open a faulty vape or try to fix it.

How to Tell If Your Elf Bar Is Real

Fake Elf Bars are the most dangerous ones, because nobody tests what is inside them: the nicotine level, the ingredients and the battery are all unknown.

Every real Elf Bar box has an authentication label. Elf Bar's own steps are:

1. Find the authentication label on the box.
2. Scan the QR code, or enter the security code.
3. Check the result on Elf Bar's own website.

Other signs of a fake:

• Health warnings missing or badly printed
• No ingredients list on the box
• A price far below every other UK shop
• Spelling mistakes on the packaging
• A taste or feel that is clearly different from the same flavour you have had before

Are Elf Bars Banned in the UK?

No. Single use disposable vapes were banned in the UK from 1 June 2025, including the old disposable Elf Bar 600. Elf Bar now sells rechargeable kits with replaceable pods, which are legal, such as the Elf Bar 600 kit.

The disposable vape ban was brought in to cut vape waste and to make vapes less appealing to children.

How to Vape an Elf Bar Safely

1. Check the authentication code on every pack. It takes a minute and rules out fakes.
2. Do not chain vape. Long, back to back draws are what make most people feel sick.
3. Store it at room temperature. Hot cars, direct sun and damp all damage batteries and e-liquid.
4. Charge with a USB-C cable you trust, and do not leave it charging unattended for hours.
5. Replace a faulty kit. A burnt taste, overheating or firing on its own means it is time for a new one.
6. Keep pods and e-liquid away from children and pets. Nicotine is toxic if swallowed.
7. Recycle the kit at a battery recycling point when you are done, not in the household bin.
