What are Coils & Pods?

Coils and pods are an essential cog in vaping, coils provide the engine that produces the vapour we inhale and in turn flavour production. Pods can also contain built-in coils but their primary function is to act as a vessel for your e-liquid much in the same way as an RTA (rebuildable tank atomiser) works.

There are many types of coils and pods on the market that cater to all vaping styles from MTL (mouth-to-lung) to DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping and everything in-between. For MTL vaping you would likely want to pick a 0.8ohm or above coil/pod and for DTL vaping a 0.6ohm and lower coil/pod would be the right choice for you.

Replacement coils come in a wide range or resistances depending on their use case similarly to built-in coil pods. They range from high resistance MTL (mouth-to-lung) coils to low resistance sub-ohm coils that are perfect for DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping. Always consult the user manual that came with your device for coil compatibility but, if you are still unsure please contact us before purchasing to avoid disappointment.

What are Replacement Pods?

Replacement pods come in two variants, as a standalone pod (no coil) or with built-in coils so always check the type of pod kit you have before purchasing either by observing the pod that came with the device or consult the user's manual that came with your device to ensure you purchase the correct coil/pod.

You may wish to purchase replacement or supplemental pods for your device either because the pod that came with the kit doesn’t have a removable coil, the pod has been damaged/lost, the coil inside has reached the end of its life, or just because you want to have one pod for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping and one for RDL (restricted-direct-lung) or DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping (depending on your pod kits capabilities), the choice is yours.

What are Sub-ohm Coils?

Specifically aimed at the DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping market, sub-ohm coils get their name simply because they are less than 1.0ohm in resistance. Sub-ohm coils typically range from 0.8ohm down to as low as 0.1ohm, the lower the resistance the more power is required to drive the coil so if you are using either a built-in battery or a single external battery device this means the battery will drain much quicker when compared to a higher resistance coil, especially so for MTL (mouth-to-lung) coils of over 0.8ohm in resistance. Sub-ohm Coils are best paired with high VG e-liquid such as 70/30 shortfills.

What are Premade / Handmade Coils?

Premade coils differ from handmade coils in the manufacturing process, premade coils are machine made coils and mesh stips, and as the name suggests, handmade coils are not mass-produced and are typically made by one coil builder that focuses quality over quantity and they often supply much more intricate and complex coils.

Premade coils are best suited to intermediate vapers that are just getting started with rebuildables whereas handmade coils can lean towards more advances vapers due to the fact that some coils may be very low resistance depending on the complexity and construction of the coil so working knowledge of both battery safety and Ohm Law is highly recommended.

What is an RBA Deck?

RBA (rebuildable atomiser) deck are available for a wide range of applications from sub-ohm tanks to pod kits and replacement or supplemental decks for RTAs (rebuildable tank atomiser) They are an excellent choice for stock coil tanks that support RBA decks as a next step away from stock coils and into rebuildables. Some RTAs also support multiple decks, especially Steam Crave’s series of rebuildable tanks which allow you to swap between dual coil to single coil, and even mesh decks.

RBA decks unlock the world of rebuildables for those that wish to try them before fully committing to fully fledged rebuildable atomiser. They range from standalone RBA decks to rebuildable stock coil heads, there’s a world of possibilities that are waiting to be discovered with our range of RBA decks here at Ecigone.

Coils & Pods FAQ

What are vape coils?

Vape coils are heating elements inside vaping devices that vaporise e-liquid. They are typically made of wire (such as Kanthal, stainless steel, or nickel) and cotton wick, which absorbs the e-liquid and produces vapour when heated.

What are vape pods?

Vape pods are pre-filled or refillable cartridges used in pod systems. Pre-filled pods contain e-liquid and a built-in coil, making them an all-in-one solution for vaping. Then you have two types of refillable pods, one with a built-in coil and another that has replaceable coils. Pods are often designed for ease of use and portability.

How do I know when to replace my vape coil?

Signs that your coil needs replacing include a burnt taste, reduced vapour production, gurgling sounds, or a decrease in flavour quality. Generally, coils should be replaced every 1-2 weeks, depending on usage.

What types of coils are available?

Coils come in various types, including single-coil, dual-coil, mesh coils, and ceramic coils. Each type offers different performance characteristics, such as flavour intensity, vapour production, and longevity.

How do I install a new coil in my device?

To install a new coil, unscrew or pull out the old coil from the atomizer or pod, prime the new coil with a few drops of e-liquid, and insert it into the device. Allow the coil to sit for a few minutes to fully saturate the wick before vaping.

What are the benefits of using mesh coils?

Mesh coils provide even heating, faster ramp-up time, and enhanced flavour production. They also tend to last longer than traditional wire coils due to their larger surface area and better heat distribution.

Are all vape pods compatible with any device?

No, vape pods are typically designed for specific pod systems. Always check the compatibility of the pod with your device before purchasing to ensure proper fit and function.

How do I refill a refillable vape pod?

To refill a refillable pod, locate the fill port (usually covered by a rubber plug), open it, and carefully fill the pod with e-liquid. Ensure not to overfill and replace the plug securely before reinserting the pod into the device.

Can I use different e-liquids in my pods?

Yes, refillable pods allow you to use any e-liquid of your choice. However, it’s recommended to use e-liquids with the appropriate VG/PG ratio and nicotine strength for your specific pod system to ensure optimal performance.

Where can I purchase replacement coils and pods?

Replacement coils and pods can be purchased online via our website. Ensure you buy from reputable sources to guarantee quality and compatibility with your device.
