What are Pod Kits?
Pod kits have vastly become the number one way for new vapers to start their vaping journeys and it’s easy to see why, they offer a very user-friendly approach to vaping that’s only rivalled by disposables. Pod kits are sometimes referred to as pod vapes or pod mods but for simplicity's sake there are two main types of pod kit and that is built-in battery and external battery pod kits each offers their own pros and cons to consider when choosing the right kit for you.
Depending on if you choose an internal battery pod kit or external battery pod kit there are generally two main components to a pod kit, the main body of the device (this houses either the internal or external battery) and the pod itself.
Just like battery types there are generally two main pod types, they are; built-in coil pods where the coil is not replaceable and replaceable coil pods. Built-in coil pods are suited to new vapers as it takes the guesswork out of what coils to buy as they will already be matched to your pod kit. However, replaceable coil pods offer much more flexibility and allows you greater choice over the coils you can use so it can come down to personal preference depending on which option sounds more tempting to you. That’s the beauty of vaping, there’s so much choice out there, there’s something for everyone of all experience levels.
Built-In Battery Pod Kits
Built-in battery pod kits are an excellent choice for new vapers that have little vaping experience, and especially so if you pick a built-in battery and built-in coil pod kit which if you’ve been vaping on disposables will give you a much easier route into vaping as the transition will feel very similar to one another. Simply place your pod kit on charge to ensure you have a full battery, and fill the pod with your chosen e-liquid and leave to soak for at least 5 minutes to allow the coil to prime properly.
Most modern built-in battery pod kits will come with two coil options, one for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping and one for either RDL (restricted-direct-lung) or DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping which will allow you to try out different vaping styles to find out which one is right for you. Many new vapers start off with MTL vaping as that most closely resembles cigarette smoking.
External Battery Pod Kits
External battery pod kits give you the flexibility of being able to have a spare battery ready to go when you run out of battery so there’s no ‘down time’ like there would be with a built-in battery pod kit while you wait for it to charge. Most external battery pod kits will use a standard 18650 vape battery that are readily available on our website and other reputable vape battery suppliers.
They are especially useful if you are away from home or you have limited access to charging facilities, so the ability to take one or more spare batteries with you is a huge plus point for external battery pod kits. Another benefit of using an external battery pod kit is that they invariably allow for a higher power output over a built-in battery pod kit so if you wish to move away from MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping and on to a more sub-ohm, DTL (direct-to-lung) style of vaping you have that option with an external battery pod kit.
What e-liquids should I use for my pod kit?
Generally speaking for most pod kits you will need either a 50/50 VG/PG ratio e-liquid or a 70/30 VG/PG ratio e-liquid. For MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping a 50/50 e-liquid will be the best option due to the fact that MTL coils are much smaller than sub-ohm coils and will require a thinner e-liquid to perform properly otherwise you can run the risk of ‘dry hits’ if you’re using a ticker e-liquid. For RDL (restricted-direct-lung) and DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping a 70/30 e-liquid will be the best option for you because those coils tend to be more power hungry and larger in size so a thicker e-liquid would work best.
For new vapers it is recommended that you use nic salt e-liquid as they are available in higher nicotine strengths but they also deliver a smoother ‘throat hit’ compared to high strength freebase e-liquids that are found in most shortfills. Nic salts will deliver a satisfying nicotine hit without the harshness, which is why they are a very popular choice for new and experienced vapers alike.
Nic salts generally come in two nicotine strengths; 10mg and 20mg, depending on how much you used to smoke you may want to start on 20mg which will satisfy your cravings quicker and then move down to 10mg after a while to help cut down on your nicotine intake. Then should you wish to lower your nicotine intake further you can move onto 70/30 VG/PG ratio shortfills that allow you to adjust the nicotine levels depending on what you want to do.
What types of coils/pods are suitable for pod kits?
This can vary from one kit to another and what you need from vaping. If you prefere MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping then any coil/pod that has a resistance rating of 0.8ohm and above will be suitable, but if you prefer a tighter draw then a coil/pod with a resistance rating of 1.0ohm and above would be best for you. But, for each pod kit on our website you will see all of the compatible coils/pods for your kit. The user manual for your pod kit will also detail the best coil/pod options for your chosen pod kit.
If you prefer RDL (restricted-direct-lung) vaping, then any coil/pod of 0.8ohm to 0.5ohm resistance will probably work best for you. If you’re more into DTL (direct-to-lung) vaping, then any coil/pod of 0.5ohm and below will work best for you. If in doubt refer to either the user manual that came with your pod kit or visit the product page on our website to see the list of compatible coils/pods for your kit.
Pod Kit FAQ
What is a pod vape kit?
A pod vape kit is a type of e-cigarette that uses a pod system to hold the e-liquid and coil, making it simple to use and maintain. It is often compact and user-friendly, ideal for beginners and experienced vapers alike.
How does a pod vape kit work?
A pod vape kit works by using a battery to heat a coil, which then vaporises the e-liquid contained in the
pod. The vapour is inhaled through the mouthpiece, delivering nicotine and flavour.
What are the differences between an open pod system and a closed pod system?
An open pod system allows users to refill the pods with their preferred e-liquid, offering more flexibility and variety. A closed pod system uses pre-filled pods that are disposed of once empty, providing convenience and ease of use.
How long does a pod last in a pod vape kit?
The lifespan of a pod varies depending on usage, but generally, a pod can last anywhere from a few days to a week. Factors such as vaping frequency, type of e-liquid, and pod capacity influence its longevity.
How do I know when to replace the pod in my vape kit?
You should replace the pod when you notice a decrease in flavour, reduced vapour production, or a burnt taste. Some pods may also show visible wear or discoloration when it's time to change them.
What type of e-liquid should I use with a pod vape kit?
Most pod vape kits are designed to work with high-nicotine e-liquids, such as nicotine salts. It's important to check the manufacturer's recommendations for compatible e-liquids to ensure optimal performance.
Are pod vape kits suitable for beginners?
Yes, pod vape kits are often recommended for beginners due to their simplicity, ease of use, and low maintenance. They provide a straightforward vaping experience without the need for advanced knowledge.
How do I maintain and clean my pod vape kit?
Maintenance typically involves regular cleaning of the device's exterior and occasional cleaning of the pod connection points. To clean, use a cotton swab with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for specific maintenance instructions.
Can I adjust the airflow and wattage on a pod vape kit?
Some advanced pod vape kits offer adjustable airflow and wattage settings, allowing users to customise their vaping experience. However, many basic models have fixed settings for simplicity.
Is it safe to use a pod vape kit?
While no vaping product is completely risk-free, pod vape kits are generally considered safer than traditional cigarettes. It's crucial to purchase devices and e-liquids from reputable manufacturers and to follow usage guidelines to minimise potential risks.
